DICE: Battlefield 3's War Needs To Feel "Credible"

When you're playing Battlefield 3, it truly feels like you're in the middle of the war zone. The dirt-soaked visuals, the stunningly lifelike animation and heart-pounding firefights all combine to create perhaps the finest recreation of war yet. DICE is proud of this, chalking it up to their ambitions of "depicting a war and everything that suggests". They've made purposeful strides to "divorce" BF3 from predecessors titles, Bad Company 1 and 2, which DICE now affectionately refer to as "action flicks", or "Indiana Jones with an assault rifle".

"We have tried to get closer to the slang of the modern warrior," lead designer David Goldfarb explains on the official Battlefield blog. "We are mixing tension-building passages with the chaos of suddenly erupting firefights. We've sought to keep the game feeling as plausible as possible, because the moment the audience stops believing it could happen, then you're just like every other shooter."

The last Battlefield game, Bad Company 2, was far more "lighthearted". Those are Goldfarb's words, and he reveals that DICE has made sure Battlefield 3 stands apart from its Bad Company siblings. "With Battlefield 3, we knew we had to really divorce ourselves from those characters and those themes," he said. "We had to go somewhere else and do something different and push a different set of buttons."

"We're telling a war story now, and that means it needs to feel credible." What DICE has shown to us so far suggest Goldfarb isn't stretching the truth; panicked escapes from snipers; delving into an underground lab to defuse a ticking bomb; against all odds firefights against seemingly endless waves of militia.
