Disney Infinity is getting a superpowered overhaul later this year with Disney Infinity: Marvel Super Heroes.
The game is set to release later this year as part of the Disney Infinity 2.0 package, which will come in the form of a new disc rather than an update to the original set. It'll be appearing across last-gen consoles and also arriving on Xbox One and PS4, featuring characters from The Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy.
Let's make no bones about it... this is something we have been clamouring for. When the original game was announced, Avalanche said that there'd been discussion about Marvel and Star Wars characters (you'd better believe that Disney Infinity 3.0 will be all about a galaxy far, far away):
"As a developer, I so want that," Avalanche Software's Blackburn said at the time. "When Disney bought Lucasfilm, I was like, 'Holy crap! This is awesome!' But at this point in time, there's been some discussions about that, there's just been no decisions made."
Well, on the Marvel side of things, decisions have most definitely been made. But I can't help but feel that Disney's own back catalogue could use some love and attention. There are 29 characters from 12 different series available right now, but that list includes Cars and The Lone Ranger, which both sucked. Sorry, but they did.
There are some far better films and franchises for Disney to hit up in the meantime, and so we've put together a little list of possibilities to help them out:
This one is a no-brainer. The Mega Drive classic was amazing. It was a brilliant platformer that is still one of the best film tie-in games ever made. The range of possible characters is brilliant too, Aladdin and Jasmine could be standard characters, but think about the gameplay opportunities that could be presented by the likes of Apu, Iago, Jafar, and (deargodpleasemakethishappen) the Genie. Disney, you have all of the money. Get Robin Williams onboard now!
Demi-gods in Disney Infinity? Yes please! Also, get James Woods back as Hades and I'll shower you with money. No, really.
If Captain America is coming to Disney Infinity, I want Tron in there too. Mainly for some kind of disc vs. shield showdown. But also because Tron is awesome, full of cool effects (the Playset would look AMAZING!), and of course light cycles. Obviously we'd need that excellent Moog-tinged Wendy Carlos soundtrack too.
I'm going to be honest, Mary Poppins is on this list for one reason and one reason alone: I'd very much like one of the Playsets to be Victorian London please.
Also a bottomless handbag stuffed with goodies and an umbrella that can make you fly would be awesome in-game items. Also because Julie Andrews is amazing.
So several reasons, in fact. But let's not have cockney Dick Van Dyke show up if at all possible.
Disney have two franchises that would make a winter sports Playset something of a must: Cool Runnings and The Mighty Ducks. Somewhere between Jamaican bobsledding and kids playing ice hockey, there's a snow-strewn sports spinoff here.
Donald Duck/Minnie Mouse/Goofy/Pluto/Oswald
Seriously Disney? Phineas over Donald Duck? Are you mad?! Where are all of the classic characters?
There are just a few ideas to get you started, Disney. The list goes on, though. How about The Muppets, Dumbo, Winnie the Pooh, The Jungle Book, and, oh you know, your biggest-selling hit for years until Frozen came along -- The Lion King?
But what about you folks, dear readers? What classic Disney IPs would you like to see come to life in Disney Infinity? Let us know in the box below.
