Buckle up Retro RPG fans, because it's time for a quick trip down memory lane. Divine Divinity and Realms of Arcadia are old school in the extreme, but luckily Good Old Gamers has given them a new DRM-free Vista-friendly downloadble lease of life. You'll be able to download these titles for £2.88 thanks to their current promotion. It's pretty difficult to lay hands on them otherwise- but this is a couple of quid cheaper than you'll usually find on eBay (if you can find them). If you're not a die-hard retro fan, it's time to stop reading now!
First up, let's talk about Divine Divinity. It essentially plays like an ugly Diablo 2, but with a rich story, character interaction and a seriously mature storyline. You'll spend more time questing, chatting and interacting with the locals than you'll spend fighting- though expect the usual range of classes, spells and skills. Ego Draconis, the underwhelming but staggeringly deep sequel, is currently on store shelves- so this is a great way of getting yourself some backstory and grounding yourself in the history. As I've said, only hardcore RPG veterans will get a kick out of this one: but I know that there are a few of us out there. I had a blast with DD back in the day and you might too if you give it a chance.
Now for Realms of Arcania. RPG's never used to be accessible or easy to pick up- and the Arcania series has more menus, inventory management In fact, you'll spend most of your time micromanaging rather than getting involved. But that's how things used to be- and Realms of Arcania is damn good at what it does. The visuals are seriously dated, but you can expect a rich storyline and awesome character customisation and to suck you in.
