It’s time to go bananas over this deal, it may be bongo-less compared to the original GameCube version, but with the usual Nintendo flair, this Wii version takes full advantage of the Wiimote. Zavvi is currently selling this with a clear gap of almost £3 over next closest rival, the electronically-resurrected Woolworths, which is stocking it for £17.97. So if you fancy a little monkey business, get clicking.
In a lot of ways the attraction of the original game was entirely down to the supplied bongos. Tapping away on these drove Donkey Kong forwards and slapping them caused him to jump and attack. This is effectively a bongo-light re-release with two new levels and the others craftily revised to up the difficulty levels, reflecting the improved accuracy the wiimote gives you.
As a game it’s a pretty platformer that takes the usual themed-level approach, topped off at the end of each with a suitable boss. The crux of the entire game is to go bananas, which is to say the more you collect the better off you are. Providing more health for the boss battles and pumping up your end-of-game score. This is possibly the biggest sore point for Jungle Beat, it’s over very quickly, even with the extra levels. Considering it’s a revamp of the original you can blast though the initial levels in a few hours. I’m sure Nintendo would point to the additional hidden-levels that are unlocked by finishing the game with enough bananas and by foraging for secret fruit.
Certainly it’s fun to play, the combo actions feel rewarding and it’s rarely punishing if you fail to pull these off, as you simply lose your valuable bananas. At this price it’s definitely worth considering, though fans of the original will have to leave their bongos behind.
