Boom Boom Boom Boom
After id Software were forced to go back to the drawing board and the legendary John Carmack jumped ship for Oculus Rift, we'd all but put Doom 4 on deathwatch. However, it seems that the vapour may be slowly coalescing back into a real game, since Bethesda has announced that Doom 4 could enter beta as soon as this summer.
Well, if you pre-order Wolfenstein: The New Order, that is.
Bethesda confirmed the beta by way of the trailer, above, which pleasingly features some classic blues and boogie woogie. More importantly, though, those who pre-order MachineGames' shooter before May 23rd will receive a code that guarantees entry to the Doom 4 beta... whenever it launches.
That last part being important to note. With no set date, the 'beta' is just a promise at this stage, while details about Doom 4 are still painfully scant.
Last year, Bethesda's Pete Hines confirmed that Doom 4 had hit a developmental stumbling block, and simply wasn't fit for task. As such, id had to effectively reboot and start from scratch. "An earlier version of Doom 4 did not exhibit the quality and excitement that Id and Bethesda intend to deliver and that Doom fans worldwide expect," Hines dismayingly reported.
"As a result, Id refocused its efforts on a new version of Doom 4 that promises to meet the very high expectations everyone has for this game and this franchise. When we're ready to talk about the Doom 4 Id is making, we will let folks know."
As will we. For the time being, why not mug up on Carl's Wolfenstein: The New Order hands-on preview?
