I've finally had the chance to put in some serious hours with Dragon Age- and I've been enjoying it thoroughly. Arcane Warrior Mage FTW!

Having said that, I was extremely disappointed by the characters and setting. Bioware had the opportunity to stamp their own distinct take on the traditional fantasy setting... but decided to go full LOTR. Seriously, the poetry-spouting Ent was the final straw! I also felt that the characters were one dimensional cliched cutouts with little going for them- with the obvious exception of Shale, who is an unashamed homage to HK47. Which can't be a bad thing.

Is it too much to ask for a fantasy RPG that doesn't have sodding elves? Seriously, let's have some unique new races already and kick Tolkien into touch.

[...] Fortunately, few of those 80+ hours are filler. BioWare has crafted something pretty special here. Sure, the console version is more hack’n’slash at times than the tactical RPG it is on the PC, but it’s still. You can read my review of it here. [...]

Unfortunately this also has Bioware's usual failing of too upbeat characters. Although described as a dark game it's really not. It's certainly mature, but despite the prospect of the end of the world there's none of the bleak humour or despair you'd expect. The darkspawn are treated more like bandits than divine retribution at it's most ravening.

Actually, given how much effort they've gone into to integrate dialogue with background choice and actions it's a surprise how poor the class system is. It's not a patch on NWN's excellent interpretation of D&D 3rd edition with many of the skills and classes simply leaving you guessing on whether they're lame or whether you're just using them in the wrong way. (for example, the shapeshifter specialisation or the archer Critical Shot talent).

I usually find that RPGs really have to force me to play all the way through sometimes. It's all too easy to screw up pacing, especially now that the scope for them is enormous these days. But this one just refuses to let go, there's something about a BioWare RPG that just ticks all the boxes.

But yeah.....you definitely need a moderately clear schedule for this one!

Looks great. BioWare have a brilliant track record so had high hopes for this. Plan to wait a bit though until the price drops, the next few months are pretty packed and my wallet just can't take the strain unfortunately!
