Now in Episodic form, coming later this year

The fine folks at Red Thread Games have released a brand new trailer this afternoon for the long awaited Dreamfall Chapters ahead of its now-episodic release later this year. Giving us a sneak peek into the stunningly realised twin worlds of Stark and Arcadia, as well as an early listen to its rather atmospheric soundtrack, there are some hidden easter eggs for eagle-eyed fans to ponder over according to creative producer Ragnar Tørnquist.

While the Kickstarted project was expected to be delivered in full in November, it was explained in an open letter last week that the game - and more to the point its story - had "turned out to be bigger and more ambitious than first envisioned." To that end, the game will now be split into five episodes, with the first releasing "before our originally announced November date." It was also made clear that current backers would receive all five episodes as part of their pledge as they are released at no extra cost.

"As a team, we believe we’re making the right choice — organisationally, financially and creatively," Tørnquist explained. "As writers, storytellers and artists we get to work in a format we love. And with every release, we will gather your feedback and improve on subsequent releases. In return, you’ll be getting a bigger, longer, more ambitious and more polished game."

Frankly, the change to an episodic form is probably the best thing in the long run (from a personal perspective it means I won't binge the entire thing in one sitting and then barrage the devs with calls of "MOAR NOW PLEASE") and the trailer has the TLJ fan in me very excited for the return of protagonists Zoë Castillo & Kian Alvane. As it says in the trailer itself, Dreamfall Chapters is certainly one of our most anticipated games of this year, and if you want to learn more about it you can check out my interview with developers Dag Scheve and Ragnar Tørnquist here, but stay tuned to the site as we'll be keeping a close eye on Red Thread Games' upcoming title in the coming months.

Dreamfall Chapters Book One: Reborn will release on PC, Mac and Linux later this year.

I'm interested if the gameplay is not as obtuse as previously. I gave TLJ a go and liked it, but I found the gameplayreally irritating. The counter intuitive, logic free, guess work heavy "puzzles" were just not fun to complete. If I had no access to walkthroughs I would have thrown it aside, and missed out on the fabulous writing which is its strength.

@googleberry: The gameplay is something they have been focused on refining. As lead designer Martin Brussgaard explained last year when I interviewed him, the aim of RTG is to deliver puzzles that lie between the obtuse and fiendish ones of TLJ, and the rather simple challenges that were in Dreamfall.

There are a number of gameplay demos out there showing how DC will be gameplay-wise (although there are obviously spoilers in them) but I appears that they've managed to hit the right middle ground. That said, we won't know for sure until we get hands-on with it.

Thanks Carl. Looking forward to hearing more when you get your hands on it.
