DualShock 4 Video Shows Size & Features

Several Sony tech developers have released a video all about the DualShock 4, the PS4's flagship peripheral. It's cloyingly smug and self-congratulatory to a fault, but does gives you a good idea of the size of the controller, as well as some of the inspiration behind its design and feature set.

I'm still not sure what the touchpad is bringing to the table.

Neither is Sony...

Seriously though (sorry), I think that RiKx might have the right of it. Another fairly minor input scheme could allow the PS4 to emulate PS Mobile games, and perhaps an occasional brave title designed to do something unique with it, but it's just there for the sake of offering something new for the time being.

Media Molecule will probably find a use for it.

While I'm glad the pad sticks with the traditional dualshock design overall I've got a couple of minor concerns. That massive blue light is probably going to reflect on glass plasma screens, particularly in the dark. What looks like a port for a charging cable next to headphone jack looks different to existing ones. More unique cables ahead Sony? It's bad enough that the vita did this, stick with mini USB and save us further wire hell.

Wow the buzz word count is through the roof for this.

I noticed the new propritary looking port as well, but it does have a headset icon above it. So I wonder if it isn't for charging.

The one thing I would have loved to see in these is wireless charging. Just leave a controller on top of the ps4 or a provided pad and it charges. That is the sort of thing people will want/use not a touch pad. The only two actions they can come up with on the video to do with it are swipe and flick things with it.

@ Jon: NEVER APOLOGISE for judicious use of an Arrested Development meme.

On topic, I need to get one my hands to be convinced. It looks sturdier and bulkier and like some actual though has gone into the ergonomics, but the proof will be in actually using the damn thing.

I agree with Brendan and monkey too. Reams of proprietary cables and other accessories would be a crying shame, and wireless charging would be a dream come true.

Yet another reason why I'm sad my Lumia got jacked.

54 Seconds in...looks like the same mini USB as the DualShock 3.
