Vita Companion App Also Confirmed
As the clock stuck midnight last night, Eurogamer unleashed a rather interesting bombshell. EVE Online spin-off and PS3 exclusive MMOFPS Dust 514 will now be free to download and free-to-play, with a “classic micro-transaction dynamic” being put in place to generate revenue, developer CCP have announced.
In an interview with executive producer Brandon Laurino, it was confirmed that players will be able to purchase AUR credits (a currency exclusive to Dust 514 that will be separate to the EVE’s ISK credits) in various different amounts which can then be used to buy vanity items to customise appearance or experience boosters, along with variants of available weaponry. Laurino was quick to point out that the purchasable weaponry will not give an advantage over players that decide to earn everything to old-fashioned way and pay nothing.
There is no micro-transaction that you can do that gives you an unfair advantage over someone who hasn't paid anything. It's the classic micro-transaction dynamic of, 'I can pay and get this item,' or, 'I can invest my time and get this item.' But neither of those options will give me an unfair advantage over the other."
It was also confirmed that all playable planets will be available to all players, sweeping away fears that map packs would need to be purchased to explore the entire game universe.
Additionally, a companion app has been announced for the Playstation Vita which will allow players to access the market to buy items, stay in contact with other players, and organise strategies for the next big battle while on the go. Laurino dropped hints at other “interesting gameplay opportunities” that the App will be able to perform in the future, but no further details were given. Sadly, it was stated that the companion app would not necessarily launch at the same time as Dust 514, but that the main game would see its launch this year. [Eurogamer]
