Eternal Darkness: Sanity's ...

After a bunch of rumours and leaks, Precursor Games' spiritual successor to Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem, named Shadow of the Eternals, is finally out in the open. The Canadian studio, helmed by ex-Silicon Knights bods Paul Caporicci and Denis Dyack, is looking for $1.5 million in crowdfunding through their own website.

“Precursor Games intends to leave no stone unturned in order to create an unparalleled experience for gamers”, said Caporicci. “We have a talented team, incredible technology with CryENGINE and a new business model where we directly integrate the fan base into the development process, allowing for new possibilities and game direction. We are very excited to see where this new direction leads.”

The  game is being planned for episodic release across PC and Wii U

Here's the story blurb:

In Shadow of the Eternals, we follow the investigations of Detective Paul Becker, who is called to one of the bloodiest massacres in Louisiana state history.  Only two survivors remain from a brutal conflict between two rival cults at the abandoned Pleasant View Hospital: one a suave, clean-cut business man – and the other a hardened, rogue-like biker.

Both men have seemingly lost all memory of who they are – and yet they are compelled to kill each other.  As Becker begins his interrogations of the suspects, their combined recollections create the world of Shadow of the Eternals.

The investigation will, however, lead players from time period to time period, with Episode 1 taking place "in Hungary, 1610 AD in the castle of Erzébet Bathory. Bathory is considered to be one most notorious female serial killers of all time; torturing and killing as many as 400 young women to death in her obsessive quest for eternal life. We follow the character of Clara, a handmaiden and lover of Bathory’s, and the events that take place during the time of these murders."

According to official site, the funds raised will be spent on finishing production on the Pilot for the series, along with "game engine costs and core system development". Apparently future episodes will cost significantly less to make, and the base level of donation at $5 does net you the first episode in the series, with all episodes said to click in at 2-4 hours in length. Additional money will go towards in-game perks, additional gaming platforms, and "other surprises".

Given that Precursor is staffed by a whole bunch of ex-Silicon Knights employees, and given that we already know resources were diverted from X-Men Legends to a game rumoured to be an Eternal Darkness sequel, is it possible that this is the rebranded, undernourished offspring of SK's enormous omnishambles?

Given what Dyack and co. did with the Canadian government's money, I'm not sure I'm ready to put my money in just yet.

As much as I loved Eternal Darkness... no chance I'm helping these guys out just yet. I'll wait until it's in the bargain bin.
