Shigesato Itoi, the writer and designer behind the Mother RPG series, has coyly spoken out to suggest that they're making progress on a "republication" effort. Since Mother 2 (better known as Earthbound) is one of the best RPGs ever made, we'd all love to be able to legally purchase it instead of, erm, you know.
“Since it’s now okay to blurt this out, here goes: the Mother republication thing I mentioned briefly before is making progress,” Itoi tweeted [translation by Earthbound Central]. “It’s not [Mother] 4, though! This has to do with making Mother playable. I can’t give out any details just yet, but I do at least need to say that it isn’t 4.”
Could he be referring to a re-release of the Mother series, then? We'd love to see a WiiWare or eShop release, while an iOS version might not be out of the question since Square Enix has been porting a fair few classic RPGs onto iThings over the last year.
Of course, there's every chance that a Mother/Earthbound re-release could end up exclusive to Japan. Earthbound 2 (Mother 3) was never technically released outside of Japan or localised into English, with only fan-translated ROMs allowing Western gamers to get involved. We live in hope, but in the meantime, I'm off to
