I wouldn't normally post this, such is my antipathy towards anything Apple do or say these days, but my general displeasure with the albino product peddling auteurs has been wiped clear at the news that you can now buy Earthworm Jim for 59p from iTunes. Which is awesome.
It's a limited time offer, mind you, part of Apple's Spring Sale that lasts for three days over the course of this glorious Spring-launching weekend, but considering that the price for it used to be £2.99, I'd say that's a pretty damn fine deal for some nostalgic adventuring action with everyone's favourite worm (discounting the Team 17 lot as they have interchangeable identities).
Considering that I was gearing up for some awesome earthworm run-and-gun action at the end of 2009 with Gameloft supposedly developing Earthworm Jim HD only to be disappointed, I'm glad to see that Jim has found his way onto a new platform in this modern day and age.
The gameplay is exactly as you might remember it, 2D side-scrolling cartoon shooter fun, in fact everything's pretty much exactly as you remember it because this is actually just a spruced straight-up port of the original, and there's nothing wrong with that! The difference between Jim's adventures and those of, say, Samus Aran, though, is that Jim has a tendency towards the crazy. I don't know what it is about invertebrates and their wacky violence, but Jim is no stranger to using cows as artillery, his own head as a whip and performing various strongman poses for your amusement if you leave him to his own devices before accidentally shooting himself with a plasma pistol.
If you already know and love Earthworm Jim then this one is a no-brainer, and if this is your first time, download it anyway (for this price it's a steal), and party like it's 1994.
The other games in Gameloft's three day sale are as follows:
- Real Football 2010
- Blades of Fury
- Earthworm Jim
- Skater Nation
- Dungeon Hunter
All reduced down to 59p.
