Fallout: New Vegas (pre-order) £29.99 @ Gameplay [PS3/Xbox 360 Games]

£29.99 is a bargain price for the upcoming Fallout: New Vegas. You’ll need to save money as there’s every chance you’ll be quitting your job / getting fired as you succumb to the lure of a new Fallout adventure.

Said to be following on from the first two games rather than the last one, the story may contain familiar elements to series die-hards. But players of Fallout 3 or newbies shouldn’t worry about being left out too much either.

As far as timelines go, the game is set three years after Fallout 3. Luckily when the bombs dropped and shattered America, Vegas was on the fringes of the impact zones, thus it still has many buildings intact. I’d imagine Celine Dion’s still playing every night, probably after mutating into a feral ghoul.

Development duties have reverted back to Obsidian Entertainment who handled the second game. Gameplay will closely resemble F3 though.  The pause inducing VATS returns, as will the Karma system and perks. Sadistic players can try out the hardcore mode where stimpacks take time to heal rather than instantaneously, ammo has weight and you also run the risk of becoming dehydrated and have to keep drinking water. No thanks, sounds like a nightmare.

Early screenshots show a very similar looking game to F3, albeit a different shade of brown. To be honest though, the graphics were never really a strong point last time out. The huge adventure and plethora of side-quests that you’d stumble upon made up for it though. Hopefully the game will be much more stable technically as F3 was riddled with bugs, with the DLC in particular crashing every few minutes.

It’s a testament to how good a series Fallout is overall though, that we’ll all be there from day one again. “Hello Celine, meet my Terrible Shotgun.”

Loved the pic. Fear and Loathing is one of the most underrated of Gilliam's films
