What's your favourite game for comfort gaming?

righteousbane |  Jul. 17, 2011 at 12:43

I have a couple of games - as well as books and films - that I never ever get bored of and play almost ritualistically at least once or twice every year without fail. Super Metroid is one, as is Deus Ex. Any one else do this?

Half Life 2 and DiRT 2. Both games I can lose myself in for a few hours when I need a cheering up: one through immersion, the other through addiction...

I play through KOTOR every year without fail. It might just be my favourite game of all time.

Football Manager (whatever iteration is current) is also a good default for me. And by good I mean fiendishly addictive...it comforts and wrecks simultaneously.

The original Crackdown is still one of the best fun experiences out there - I've finished it 7 or 8 times and its still fun. Also Far Cry 2 - its just an amazing world to explore with so much character. Clint hocking rules. Then there is always Catan and Ticket to ride on XBLA - they are boardgames, but the AI opponents mean all the hassle is taken out of 2 of the very best games out there - board, electronic or otherwise. Same can be said for Carcasonne. Once all the annoying scoring is handled by the 360 - it becomes a completely different experience. I love games me.

I always used to go back to Civ (which ever was the latest one at the time) but I have broken the cycle by not buying Civ5

I keep going back to 'Slay' on the iPhone. Perfect for those short, packed out train journeys

Tetris. I wouldn't say it's my favourite game, but it's definitely gotta be the game I've played most in my life. Great for challenging yourself, and equally great for whiling away the time.
Thank you Alexey Pajitnov.
