Oh my! Well for me it kind of comes down to a straight fight between BioWare and Bethesda. Mass Effect 1 is probably my favourite, and ME2's RPG mechanics were notoriously absent or underwhelming. But then you have things like Oblivion right at the start of the 360's life cycle and, of course, Fallout 3.

Before anyone asks, no, FFXIII wouldn't get a look in at all.

Fallout 3, closely followed by Oblivion, Puzzle Quest and Mass Effect.

Bethesda are the kings of the open-world RPG... and probably of Western RPGs in my opinion.

Fallout 3, without a doubt. The retrofuturist aesthetic is beautifully realised, and you're never short of things to do in the wasteland. Game-changing scenarios like Megaton offer plenty of replayability, with the quests branching dramatically depending on the choices you make.

As someone who just felt bogged down by Oblivion's lack of direction (don't worry, I'm still looking forward to Skyrim just as much as you, dear reader), Fallout provided a welcome surprise when it immersed me in its world and refused to let go for a solid fortnight.

The thought of a Fallout game on Bethesda's new engine makes me [stop right there - Ed]
