It might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but that said, Fuel is a racing game which has a good deal going for it, and even though it’s not quite up to the same standard of games like Dirt or Pure, it’s definitely worth a punt at this price. For £7.85 you can hold of a copy from Shopto which is the cheapest deal currently going by a good few quid.
The gameplay of Fuel more or less consists of tearing round a vast open world format in a variety of different vehicles. And when I say vast, I am talking about a sprawling, post-apocalyptic landscape which covers no less than 5,000 square miles. The number of vehicles on offer is massive and includes everything from crossers to dune buggies, and the sheer amount of challenges is similarly mind-boggling. The races themselves can be fun and much of the enjoyment derives from the fact that winning is often about finding the best short cuts.
Cutting in front of the opposition at the last moment after some hair-raising dash through a dense forest or some insane jolt down a practically vertical cliff face makes for some superb gameplay moments. However, despite its strengths Fuel is often let down by poor opponent AI and the fact that there is very little incentive to explore the 5,000 square miles of terrain on offer. It’s disappointing when you consider what a great game Fuel could have been, but overall, it unfortunatly ends up being little more than average.
