Off-Rails PVP Space Combat Is Almost Here
It's something that has been hinted at in recent months, but last night BioWare revealed their next digital expansion for Star Wars: The Old Republic. Titled Galactic Starfighter, it will add "free flight" PvP space combat to the game for the first time. The operative phrase there is "free flight," as the PvE space missions have all been on-rails - something that has been criticized by many since launch. We've got all the details about the upcoming update, including the announcement trailer, after the jump.
As the trailer states, Galactic Starfighter will provide 12 vs 12 PvP space combat between Sith and Republic players across several scenarios, with fully customisable fighters for players to upgrade as they rise through the ranks of a new progression system. Subscribers will be able to jump into the action in December with a selection of added bonuses to get started with, while Preferred Status players (ie. previous subscribers or those who have bought from the microtransaction store) will be able to join in from Januaray 2014. Free To Play players will finally be able to access the new content from February 2014. You can read more about it by heading to the official website.
Despite widespread criticism for many understandable reasons, and even though its move to Free To Play was hailed as the death knell by doomsayers, SWTOR has found a moderate level success since it switched from being a subscription-based MMO last year. Will the upcoming digital expansion bring back those who abandoned BioWare's online title? That remains to be seen, but the addition of free flight space combat is certainly a move in the right direction.
