Game Buzz Extra | Grand Theft Auto V

Matt Gardner
Game Buzz, Grand Theft Auto V, GTA V, Podcast, PWNCAST

While we were waiting for Rockstar's servers to start behaving themselves today, Carl and I figured that we'd sit down and have the big chat that a few regulars requested of us last week. I realise that there are certain elements of my review of GTA V that have proven contentious for some, and so I wanted to extend the debate, bring Carl into the conversation, and hopefully provide a few new perspectives.

So here it is: The GTA 'Cast. Do let us know what you make of it, and hit us up with your opinions, questions, and criticisms. Once we make it into GTA Online without getting booted from  the serves, you can be sure that we'll be sharing our thoughts on that too.

I disagreed with the GTA review but that should in no way take the shine off the achievements of the dealspwn crew over the last year or two. You all communicate intelligently, articulately and with great insight and humour and are a joy to read/listen to.

But mostly it's your interaction with the readership and your accessibility that sets you apart from the competition.

I really mean it when I say keep up the good work guys.

Thanks for the kind words dklunan! I think I speak for the team when I say that we're also enormously appreciative of regulars such as yourself and the wider community who engage with the things that we write (whether in agreement or not, discourse is awesome) and comment to share opinions. As much as we write because we love doing it and love this industry, we're nothing without you guys.

So thanks :)

I actually enjoyed the review. I don't have the game yet, though undoubtedly will be buying it when released on the PC. One of the key designers in rockstar is an old friend of mine so I'm not in any sense against their type of games - they have a well justified place in gaming history. However the release of each of the GTA games does follow a pattern in terms of most reviews (a criticism of reviewers rather than the games here) - lots of positives - lots! with the negative aspects often being glossed over until much later. How many times have you heard people say, that GTA IV felt really good when I first played it but it, well, got a bit boring. Or, 'I really liked San Andreas, but spent most of my time with eye strain looking at that damn silly, tiny map.'

So, all I can say is well done Dealspwn for mentioning the bad points and doing so in an honest and candid way - this is how game designers improve their product.

I don't think 7/10 is what I will give the game when I do play it - I would imagine it's going to be closer to 8, maybe even 8.5 and my extra points will probably be awarded for once again pushing the extremes of what we can expect from narrative-led gaming. The issues of misogyny and violence for no apparent reason or without consequence do concern me; not in a 'concerned parent' way, but because if rockstar are truly wanting us to experience a story well told then the reasoning of the main characters and the personality of the other characters that inhabit their world need to be understandable. It makes the story come alive... just watch Breaking Bad for probably the best example you could see at the moment.

Can't really disagree with many of the negatives in your review of the game. I just think the positives in the game massively outweigh the negatives to the degree the game's a definite 9 for me.
Might've even been a 10 if online worked.
Day three - still can't get that dammed first race to start :| Has been "launching session" for nearly an hour now (interrupted by two reboots).
