GAME Oxford St. To Close Next Month

The site of many midnight launches is to be abandoned next month as GAME make preparations to close their flagship Oxford Street store on September 8th. However, a spokesperson stated that this move was only due to the expiration of the lease on the property, refuting the rumours of more mass closures.

"We can confirm that we will be closing our Oxford Street store on 8th September 2012 due to the expiration of the lease," said a GAME spokesperson earlier today.

"Our West End customers can visit our concession in Hamleys on Regent Street, our flagship store in Westfield Stratford, or our websites at http://www.game.co.uk or http://www.gamestation.co.uk. We also have stores in Hammersmith, Surrey Quays, and Westfield White City."

The big purple retailer has said that it's "actively looking at other retail options in the West End", and for the moment the Oxford Street store staff have been temporarily relocated across the Greater London area. [via GI.biz]

I told them they shouldn't have opened a Bond Street branch too, once they did the rent doubled at the other two!

Wait, it's been so long since I played Monopoly, or went to London. I'm confused :)

I'm worried about my pre-orders now

Hmm, I just pre-ordered the XCOM remake from the GAME website because there was no mention of the pre-order bonus (Elite Soldier Pack) on Amazon.co.uk.

I don't order from Zavvi anymore because they messed up both orders I ever placed with them.

I've never understood midnight launches - you have to queue for hours - with an increased chance of getting mugged in the early hours on your way home (especially console launches). But if you pre-order online, you almost always get the goods the day before the launch - sometimes even sooner!

To be fair, I don't think Game group are in the trouble they were in before, or anywhere close to that.
Sounds entirely plausible (and even commendable/responsible) to close one of your shop with the highest rent demands if the lease runs out while your company is feeling a bit short of cash in the middle of a recession.
I definitely wouldn't worry about any preorders etc.

I offer no guarantees, mind... ;)
