GAMES OF THE GENERATION: Community Top 50

MattGardner |  Dec. 11, 2013 at 18:36

Thanks to an excellent idea by r3tract we're going to make this A Thing. Let's do it. Let's compile the ultimate list:

GAMES OF THE GENERATION: Community Top 50

Over the course of the next week we'd like to invite you, our dear and glorious readers, to submit your Top 30 Games of the Last Generation. To keep a little mystery you can email them in to matt[at]dealspwn[dot]com (use the subject "Community GOTG" if possible), and then after the week is up we'll compile all of the submissions we've received and cook up a community Top 50.

Of course, if you want to share your list, then by all means pop it here in this thread. If you're agonising over the decisions (30 is not a large number and you're going to need to be ruthless), then this is where to come to tell us about your quandary.

We'll close the nominations next Wednesday, but in the meantime let's spark some debate, trade some opinions on the best that the past decade has had to offer, and have a bit of fun! :)

Woohoo. :)

Cheers guys.

I'll work on my list and send tomorrow.

30 is going to take me forever. I think each peep posts 10. Most posted at one and so on. 30 and i'll be arguing with myself. For quite a while.

r3tract  Dec. 11, 2013 at 22:07

30 is reasonable.

The way I'm approaching it is to start by listing all the games I think are "up there".

First thing is to narrow the list to 30 which should be relatively easy.

Then I'm going to pick the top 10, 10-20 and 20-30 lists.

Then I'll order those into rank.

Think of it as 3 lists of 10 and it becomes easier to manage. :)

MattGardner  Dec. 11, 2013 at 22:19

30 seems like a lot. But thirty games in seven years divides down pretty quickly. It's amazing how fast you run out of space!

Already had the first couple of nominations, and one or two surprises in there certainly!

So is this just 30 games you want a list of in any order? Or do you want us to list a top 30 in order (as in will a game carry more weight if its number one on someones list, as opposed to 30th?)

MattGardner  Dec. 11, 2013 at 22:51

It's up to you. Rank as many or as few as you like. We'll look for multiple counts first and foremost and then use ranks to distinguish within numerical bands where applicable.

Sent my list. :)

Gonna take me a few days, I reckon...

r3tract  Dec. 12, 2013 at 08:32

By the way, I recommend that the rule should be no "HD Remakes" of previous gen titles.

Agree with that... I've also tried to avoid franchise repeats wherever possible (though feel free to count my vote for Borderlands 2 towards a more general 'Borderlands' total if that helps simplify things)

MattGardner  Dec. 12, 2013 at 10:55

Sent my list. :)

We got it :) Nomination submissions in double figures now.

Sent. Damn but that's tricky. I was that close to sending you a list of 33 because I couldn't bear to cut three from the list, but I got it down to 30 eventually.

Now I wait for the dealspwn staff's top 10 list to be published, at which point I'll see an amazing game that I love but somehow completely forgot to put in my top thirty...

It's slightly skewed, as will be the case for most folk, as I only had one of the big two consoles last gen - so most of my list is either Xbox or multiplatform (so Sony exclusives don't get a look in, despite some of them looking fantastic).
I also don't really do pc gaming, and didn't get along very well with the Wii - though it did actually get a few games quite high up on my list.

I surprised myself, though, by having an indie wii game at number 5. I later bought that game on pc and played it all the way through again. I also bought it on android, and I think I also got it on xbox360. I guess if you're happy to pay to get the same game over and over again on multiple different platforms it's worthy of a high position on your list, even if it doesn't make anyone else's list! ;)

Huge thanks to everybody who's sent in their nominations! Let's keep them coming!

The prediction was close. It was one of the comments that reminded me...
Lego! How the hell did I miss Lego from my list?! Narrowing it down to a single Lego game would be hard*, but I love those games, and have spent most of the last week playing Lego Marvel...

* it'd probably be either Lego Star Wars Complete Saga, or Lego Batman. Or Lego Marvel.

We're not supposed to be including PC in this are we? Since it's about the games of the console generation I thought PC had nothing to do with it. If they are included then this just makes my list even more impossible...

Agree with the not including remakes too and I think I'm gonna go with only having one game from each franchise otherwise the list will probably just be awash with multiple entries from great franchises.

I already know that for some people I will probably make criminal omissions just for not having played certain games (like the Assassins Creed games)

Good point Drago. When we voted, we were limited to games on PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii only. That means no PC or handheld exclusives, basically.

LEGO Lord of the Rings or Pirates of the Caribbean for me. Both sublime games.

NostromoXP  Dec. 14, 2013 at 01:22

Well that is my top 30 sent.

Thanks to my games list on xbox.com (and steam for some of the multi platform games) it is easy to see what games I have played in the last 6 or 7 years.

Getting it down from 202 (Is that a lot?) to 30 was a bit of a struggle. I look forward to seeing if any of my top 30 make it into the community Top 50.

Drago_MkII  Dec. 16, 2013 at 21:55

Are we allowed to list more than 1 game for a franchise as 1 position in the list? Like Portal 1/2 and Borderlands 1/2? Just thinking that if I'm only putting 1 from each franchise then if other people vote for a different one in the series and I haven't placed it in the list, due to limiting to 1 per franchise, then good games are missing out on a vote...

Late  Dec. 16, 2013 at 23:11

Personally, I just went with my favourite installment from each franchise, but I don't suppose there's any reason you couldn't have more than one if you want.

I get what you're saying and favourite installment from the franchise was how I was doing it but what I mean is can I place them as 1 i.e

4. Halo Reach
5. Borderlands 2/1
6. Batman Arkham Asylum
and so on

Just thinking about split votes within a franchise causing good games to come lower than they should against stand alone games or series where the best is completely obvious due to them tallying games across lists. I guess maybe I'm just over thinking it lol

Late  Dec. 17, 2013 at 02:11

Yeah, you're over-thinking it :p

There's any number of ways for admin to collate the lists everyone sends to them, some of which would favour some games more than others.

For instance, I recall reading that COD4 MW came top of the staff poll because it's the only game that all staff had on their lists. Because that was the main factor for admin that game that came top overall. They could easily have gone with a different method of collating the data, though (1st gets 50 points, 2nd gets 45 points, 3rd gets 40 points, 4th gets 38 points, and so on... perhaps) which might've seen a different game crowned king of the generation.

Best bet is just go with your gut.

I had COD WAW on my list, even though I know COD4 MW was much more popular. (I enjoyed MW but decided to put only one COD on my list.) I'm aware I'm hampering COD's chances at a top spot by voting a different installment to other folks, but it's all just a bit of fun... ;)

Just played through Journey. Have had to drop another game from my list lol. Such a great game

List sent and man was that tough to decide. I'm still not even sure I'm totally happy with it!
