Which old games would you like to see get the HD treatment?

MattGardner |  Mar. 22, 2012 at 12:32

We're recording Sunday's PWNCAST this evening, and the topic this week will be HD remakes and re-releases. What games from yesteryear would you like to see re-released?

Most Useful Answer Matthawk  Mar. 22, 2012 at 17:07

SOCOM: US Navy SEALs I & II

These were two of the best online third-person shooters I have ever played and ushered in the rise of online console gaming on the PS2. None of the sequels have come close to replicating the gameplay and community within the game that the original players became so addicted to. I think a HD remake would far exceed any future sequel in sales...

Cliched and obvious, but Final Fantasy. Pretty much all of them!

Some of the older GTA games might also stand up well today, if given a bit of an overhaul. Problem with that would be we're used to newer features, and would miss them if the older stuff came back with only a graphical overhaul - you'd need to add a lot of stuff to bring it up to scratch.
I'm ignoring the (fantastic at the time) original top-down GTAs, here.

MGS1 should've been done with the others. It was my favourite of the series (or rather my fave of the three I've played) and it's a crying shame they didn't do it. Haven't bought the HD collection yet - I'll wait until bargain bin prices - but I'm sure it'd be in my collection now if the original were included.

Would love to see some sort of remake of my favourite game of all time, Laser Squad (or it's predecessor, RebelStar Raiders) a hankering which harks back to the late 80s. There have been some games like them (including x:com (made by the same people) and frozen synapse), but none that were as much fun to play. Of course, that's a completely personal want - I'm sure everyone has their own - and not only would a remake not be popular (or noticed, even) for most folk - it'd also probably not be as much fun for me. The fog of nostalgia can be very dense. (Actually, I seem to recall they did make a newer Laser Squad, called Nemesis, a while back. Never did try it...)

And did I mention Final Fantasy?
Been feeling the need to crack out my ps1 copy of FF7 lately - and last night I started FF3 on the DS.

Knights of the Old Republic would be nice, plus Deus Ex 1, Fallout 1&2, Soul Reaver and Ape Escape

System Shock 1 and 2, everything Tim Schafer did in the 90s, and I'd actually like to see Command and Conquer Renegade on XBLA/PSN. I actually liked that game.

Please don't hurt me for saying that!

Splinter Cell Chaos Theory. Just the online made all HD with all of the online maps from the other Cells. Best multiplayer game ever, imo.

Burnout 3 would need barely any changes apart from a HD graphics update. There has not been an arcade racer as good since. The lobby sytem, track variety, road rage was all perfect, since then Criterion have gone further and further away from that winning formula.

Burnout Revenge (360) is being taken offline by EA just as Ridge Racer comes out. With the Flatout history Unbounded could be good but if they put out just the minigames from Flatout 2 and maybe added in 12 more it would be an awesome budget XBLA game. It's a shame Flatout 2 came out for Xbox after the 360 and so barely anybody bought it. They kind of did a 360 version but in that the stunt mode was all at once, taking away the fun of watching other people's attempts.

You beauty. Laser Squad FTW. Would make an awesome IOS game, too much emphasis these days on real-time sims. It'd be nice for a turn based romp. Might as well add Ultimate stuff from those Ashby boys.

If you could add Millenium 2.2/Deuteros (Ian Bird) to your list then that's me done.

Hogs of War all the way

Never going to happen but one game I loved was Buffy The Vampire Slayer :)

Mega-lo-menia or the original populous on the atari, both were my favourite old-school games!

But more realisticly, either BattleZone or FreeSpace2. Both excellent games and ones I would happy play again with a HD Upgrade.

You know what - I might even dig out those disks now and have a retro game evening :)

Elite - this deserves a decent remake

Commander Jameson was saving the universe long before Shepard

FF7, every time.

If I can't have that, then Super Metroid. The silly thing about this one is that Shadow Complex already showed it'd work.

If not, then any of: Quake 2, Duke Nukem 3D, Castlevania: SotN, Streets of Rage 2, and probably more.

Oh, and Dizzy.:p

Yeah, FF7... would probably pay £50 for HD FF7.

For something not FF7, Second Sight and Timesplitters series.

A game which has left a real impression on me, even to this day, is "Interstate '76" (1997) - a vehicular combat game set in the '70s, with a great story, and the coolest cast of characters in a video game, ever. I just absolutely loved that game, even though it certainly wasn't perfect. The biggest problem I remember is that the graphics made it a bit tough to make out the terrain in some instances. Fix the graphics, and the game would be pretty much perfect. In fact, you probably wouldn't have to touch any other part of it.

"The Longest Journey" (2000) is another one. An epic adventure game which simply blew me away. But I think the graphics are set at 640x480, which is obviously problematic these days.

By HD treatment I assumed you meant only last generation games as they are able to be upscaled without a complete overhaul. The ps3 has so many HD collections now which I've really enjoyed, GOW, Sly cooper, jak & daxter, ratchet & clank, TR and so on. What's missing for me is Kingdom Hearts HD.

DivideByZero  Mar. 23, 2012 at 09:26

Yeah... Kingdom Hearts would be great... but the camera would also need some work, it really lets the game down, about the only thing that does IMO.

Interstate 76 was very cool too... i would replay that in HD.

gambe1984  Jun. 7, 2012 at 21:37

Personally it'd have to be the .Hack games, theyd make one great RPG bundle, or even the Suikoden games, however SOCOM is a pretty good choice too.

AlexWilla  Jul. 27, 2012 at 23:42

Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver 1 & 2 ...
Maybe not just HD though as a remake would be better. Since silicon knights are doing Tomb Raider it would be good to see what they could do with Soul Reaver once they have finished with that....
