"It Will Be For Quite A Few Levels"
Borderlands 2 has now received several substantial (and rather excellent) pieces of downloadable content over the last few months, but despite constant pressure from players, the level cap still hasn't been raised since September. However, Gearbox are apparently planning a substantial level cap increase before the end of Q1.
So, March, basically.
Borderlands 2 producer James Lopez confirmed the incoming level cap increase to OPM during an interview about the Sir Hammerlock's Big Game Hunt DLC pack, which released yesterday. “We do have one planned," he said, "and it will be for quite a few levels which will allow you play for quite a bit longer. We also have a plan for Q1″.
Apparently Gearbox has held off on the much-requested feature because Borderlands 2's improved metrics and stat tracking suggests that most players don't need it yet.
“With Borderlands 1 we had to go by forum posts, and by checking out the number times certain achievements had been unlocked to really get an idea of where players were” Lopez explained. “But SHiFT allows us to see a lot more about the way players are playing the game, and see what they’re doing. We wanted to give people enough time to get at least one level 50 in there, and then see from there, how many people are doing this. Is this a good time for this? We also didn’t want to wait so long that people were no longer interested, or felt like it wasn’t coming”.
We have yet to learn whether the level cap increase will be introduced by the fourth piece of Season Pack DLC or a smaller update. With luck, they'll also give us something else to spend all that surplus Eridium on...
