Gears of War has been canonized as one of the most definitive third person shooters of all time, but if you still haven’t got to grips with the sequel, copies are now going for just £9.93 from The Hut. This is a great deal considering the next best price comes in at £13.99 from HMV.
The original Gears of War awed critics with its cinematic style, superb graphics, and slick cover system, and rather than setting out to redefine the core gameplay in the sequel, Epic Games have chosen to build on what worked in the original. The storyline still sees Marcus Fenix battling to stem the locus invasion, but has a more of an epic feel, with the humans fighting a losing battle against their more powerful rivals and trying to contend with a disease called ‘rust lung’. The voice acting is still top notch, but some may find the convoluted storyline a little frustrating as much of it is left unresolved by the end.
Not a great deal seems to have changed in terms of gameplay although Epic Games have introduced some subtle refinements. The cover system has been improved so that Fenix clings to surfaces more accurately. When injured, the player is also able to crawl towards a team mate in order to be revived, and there are also some cool new toys like flamethrowers - which are always handy for ‘close encounters’. Melee combat is more dynamic and grittier, with an assortment of finishing moves including a grabbing ability which allows Fenix to use soak up bullets whilst hiding behind a captive enemy. Overall, Gears of War 2 is a sequel which should be in the collection of every fan of the original, and although it can’t quite be described as flawless, it certainly comes close.
