One of the best looking games on the X360 to this date, Marcus Fenix and co.'s second adventure is another action-filled, adrenaline-fuelled, goretastic bulletfest packed with chainsaws, alien hordes and more steroids than you'd find at a weightlifting convention.
Missed out on Tom's deal last week? No worries as Zavvi have dropped the price on the Game of the Year edition of GOW2 to just £9.95, a quid cheaper than the next price over at MyMemory.
Bored to tears by cover shooters? Well, as the big daddy, the GOW saga probably won't change your mind, but you'd be churlish to write off this game before giving it a go. the fact of the matter is that Gears of War 2 just manages to do everything a bit better than all of its genre contemporaries (including the original game). The controls are tight, the enemies intelligent and the pacing utterly perfect. Mobile cover is a great addition, meaning that shootouts don't just degenerate into static firefights. Your companion's AI oscillates between mouse-like timidity and brazen idiocy, but grab a mate and a second controller and you have one of the finest co-op action experiences out there.
Leap online to check out the Horde mode and you'll find yourself pitted against increasingly difficult swathes of enemies, battling for survival. It's a basic concept, and it's executed simply, but it doesn't really need anything else, proving challenging, engrossing and always entertaining.
I'll be honest, I held off a long time til buying Gears 2, but it really is a game that should be in every X360 owner's collection.
