Single-Player Add On Puts You In Locust General's Boots
Having already unveiled the first round of Gears 3 post-release content, Horde Command, Epic Games have now revealed what's up next. Jaws will drop, as 'RAAM's Shadow' brings back the legendary Locust general as he storms Ilima City post-Emergence Day with an army of Kryll in tow. You'll control RAAM himself in a three hour campaign set before the first Gears game, but you'll also switch sides to the CoG where you'll lead Zita Team as the legendary Stranded-cum-Gear, Michael Barrick.
According to the Epic Games press release, RAAM's Shadow is the "biggest DLC release we've ever made". Boasting three hours of all new story and gameplay content set before the events of the first game, six new multiplayer characters, the 'Chocolate Weapon Set' pack and 250 additional Gamerscore to unlock. RAAM's Shadow is set to be released on December 13th and will cost 1200 MS Points.
"RAAM’s Shadow” drops players into the events of Sera post-Emergence Day, as Zeta Squad is enlisted to evacuate Ilima City and protect the citizens against a Locust Kryll storm," reads the press release. ""Taking on the infamous Locust leader from “Gears 1,” General RAAM, Zeta is led by Michael Barrick (from “Gears of War” comics fame) and comprised of familiar faces such as Lt. Minh Young Kim (“Gears 1”) and Tai Kaliso (“Gears 2”), and also includes a new female comrade, Alicia Valera."
Fans of the original Gears game will remember Lieutenant Minh Young Kim met his demise on the end of RAAM's wickedly sharp blade. Epic is obviously very excited about the add-on, with design director Cliff Bleszinski chiming in to hype the return of RAAM. "RAAM’s imposing size and strength, along with his Kryll shield, make him one of the most powerful and daunting foes in the ‘Gears’ universe,” said Bleszinski. “We think fans are going to have a blast unleashing hell upon the poor humans for the first time in a campaign setting.”
Personally, I couldn't be more excited. We've all grown pretty disillusioned with post-release content as of late, with publishers amputating content from full games to leverage for further profit, and the general quality of DLC is declining steadily. But RAAM's Shadow sounds utterly fantastic, a bite-sized morsel of awesome side-story content. It looks like Epic is pitching RAAM as an altogether different beast to control, with the inclusion of oft-rumored Barrick and the return of Lt. Kim are sure to delight fans, including us!
