Gears of War 3 is already positively overflowing with new features and content, from the single-player and multiplayer offerings, to Horde and Beast modes. Well, we can now add full stereoscopic 3D support to that list, as Epic have just announced the feature today.
"It felt like something we wanted to have," said Rod Fergusson, in a chat with Eurogamer. "It was a feature we didn't want to be deficient in. When you look at Gears 1, it was what people used to demo HD at the time."
Fergusson went on to explain that while 3D is a "fledgling technology", Epic wanted to include it in Gears of War 3. Just for the hell of it, probably. Even if they do believe 3D is still a "niche feature".
In order to pump two feeds out to each eye in order to provide a 3D image, Epic have been forced to drop the resolution on Gears of War 3 when the feature in engaged, resulting in a "jaggier" image, according to Fergusson.
And it won't be as good as the 3D seen on the Playstation 3, with the 360 still lagging behind in the technical stakes. However, that's all about to change very soon, according to Fergusson, who revealed the new upcoming 360 dev kits would support updated 3D support on-par with the PS3.
But not quite in time for Gears of War 3, we're afraid. Still, a nice feature to have if you've got the tech at home. [Eurogamer]
