God Of War: Ascension Trophy Renamed Following Misogyny Backlash

A trophy in God Of War: Ascension has been officially renamed following controversy over whether it was deeply misogynistic.

"Bros Before Hos," the trophy in question, pops up after you stamp the face off of one of the Furies - Ascension's female antagonists. So, yeah. Make of that what you will.

"Yep it is a trophy," game director Todd Papy tweeted following the backlash. "In fact one of our female producers came up with it. Right or Wrong..."

Sony Santa Monica will soon deploy a patch to change the trophy's name. "The text was offensive to some members of our community and impacted their enjoyment of the game," Sony Santa Monica said in a statement issued last night. We are endlessly committed to ensuring that our community can fully enjoy the experiences the team has created. As such, we've addressed the feedback and amended the Trophy in question." To be honest, we feel that this achievement might benefit from a change, perhaps because its jokey frat house tone doesn't belong in a grim fantasy game like God Of War and jerks you out of the atmosphere it strives to create. Though that didn't stop God Of War 3 from including something similar, of course. Thoughts?

Ahh I shouldn't worry too much, women don't tend to play button masher games like this. These games are way to primitive, they prefer something a bit more intelligent.

Can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not, but I love GoW & most other primitive games, as well as the other more intelligant stuff. Except CoD, can't stand that.

Santa Monica should have kept it. People who play GoW games know what to expect (hello sexy time mini games!?) so shouldn't be offended by the (IMO) hilarious trophy name.

Yet again, crusaders fighting a cause that never existed. I'm amazed that they don't get offended when the wind changes direction.

So let me get this right, someone that actually went out and bought the ultra violent God of War has complained about a possibly misogenistic achievement? PERSPECTIVE! Get Some!

I assume they'll patch out the sex mini games from the previous games just in case someone cries about it?

Shamelessly playing devil's advocate for a second: things like the sex and violence make sense within the confines of the game. Kratos is a powerful and angry man with nothing to lose. Insane gore, totally fine. Sex minigames, totally fine.

But achievements aren't actually part of the game, they talk directly to players. And when you've beaten a female character to death in the most horrific way possible - there's no option to not do so - to be told 'bros before hos' could be just a little bit degrading, no? Yeah, go you. You've just stomped on a woman's face. Nice one... bro.

This is personal taste, and personally, I'm having trouble caring that much. I feel that the achievement was a spur-of the moment thing with no malice intended, but one that should have gotten a bit more forethought. It's definitely possible to appreciate why people might have been offended, IMO, even if you're not offended yourself.

Nail hit firmly on the head Jon, good point.

Reviewing the game now. Avoided the patch and got the 'banned' trophy. Since patch it's now called 'Bros before Foes.' Both are terrible and don't even match the event itself. The 'Quaid' trophy is a fun reference though. There's even a cheeky Nathan Drake baiting one.
