They're perhaps a bit old, now, but have you tried the X games?

X: Beyond The Frontier (2000)
X2: The Threat (2003)
X3: Reunion (2005)
X3: Terran Conflict (2009)

I absolutely loved the first two - haven't tried the two X3s (and I've no idea why the 4th isn't X4!)
Not sure how similar to Freelancer the series is, as I've not played that, but it looks the same sort of thing from what I can see on a quick look.

God I loved Freelancer. Descent Freespace is damn good as well...and if you like you space sims to be a bit more beardy then you could do worse than he X series. However, if you have an iPhone or iPad, I'd check out Galaxy on Fire and GoF 2...if you can get to grips with the controls, they're utterly brilliant.

Edit: X is far more free-ranging than Freelancer, its scale is vast, almost like that of an MMO, and the games tend to toss you in at the deep end. If you're looking for something expansive yet accessible, as Freelancer was, I'd recommend Freespace or DarkStar One.

If you're looking for new space sims, you might want to get in on the ground floor with Miner Wars 2081. It's still in beta, but it's a lot of fun.

If you've got an Xbox 360, you'll be able to grab Space Pirates From Tomorrow or Final Rift for next to nothing from the Indie marketplace.

Otherwise, good calls from Late and Matt if you're looking for some slightly more venerable sims.

Oh, and I-War is amazing.

If you want to try a MMO, Eve online

Independence Was 2: Edge of Chaos is one of the greatest space sims. I've played almost every space sim and nothing feels as close to my perception of space flight as I-War 2. You can grab it cheap on GoG.

Best played with a HOTAS though, like a Saitek X52.
