The Grass Is Always Greener... I have a PS4, so why do I really want an Xbox One?

The grass is always greener on the other side. Early on in a new generation of consoles, you usually have to pick between two big rivals. It’s been like that throughout all of my formative gaming years. Sega vs. Nintendo. Nintendo Vs Sony. Sony Vs Microsoft. Whatever side you choose though, chances are your console is going to have a slow start during the first 18 months, especially with development time of the big Triple A titles getting longer and longer.

As a PS4 gamer I’ve had plenty of games to enjoy since launch from exclusives like Infamous and Killzone to the compelling third-party efforts like Assassin’s Creed IV, Wolfenstein the Lego games and more recently Diablo III: Ultimate Evil Edition. After E3 and Gamescom though, I have to admit I’ve been getting itchy feet and the feeling that I’m missing out by not having an Xbox One, like I said, the grass is always greener and all that.

Sony has kept many of their exclusives under tight wraps, with nothing solid to show yet for Uncharted and The Last Guardian. The constant delays and changing messages of DriveClub haven’t been encouraging and The Order: 1886 is still lacking that special something. And don’t even get me started on the complete silence on the future of the God of War series.

Yet I look over at the Xbox One lineup and I see my beloved Insomniac bringing all the fun to the table with Sunset Overdrive (which I’ve managed to convince myself will be boring after half an hour) when gaming is crying out for a new-gen platformer in the ilk of Ratchet & Clank.

Of course, it is mainly the exclusives that have me checking out the competition. Quantum Break is looking fantastic. As a fan of Max Payne and Alan Wake, this is so my kinda jam. I’m still not sure (or that bothered) about how it ties in with the included TV episodes, but as far as experiences to show off a new console’s grunt go, this is certainly one to watch.

Titanfall has had its highs and lows since launch, but it seems to be getting its act together now and after my brief hands-on pre-launch last year, I’ve been dying to see a multi-platform sequel announced ever since.

The EA Access subscription that has become an XO exclusive looks like a fantastic deal to me. One price for EA’s sporting lineup and Battlefield is fantastic value and Sony’s snub of the deal can only be realistically explained as them not wanting competition for their own PS Plus service, which we’d need to play these games online in the first place, just like MS are charging on top of EA’s fee. You do have to wonder when this year’s games may appear on the service though.

Microsoft has been making some great moves since Phil Spencer took over too. We’ve seen a price-drop with the Titanfall bundle and a sans Kinect bundle gave gamers the choice they should have had from the start. They’ve even found a use for my dusty Xbox 360 again as a Netflix-box now I no longer require a Gold sub to use the film streaming service. I really don’t want to be one of those people forced into buying an XO for Rise of the Tomb Raider either, but if I have the console already by then...

So does this all mean I’m trading in my PS4? Of course not, I’m still psyched for loads of big exclusives on Sony’s console (come on DriveClub, don’t be rubbish!), I prefer the DualShock 4 and I don’t want to be peeking back over the fence from the XO side and writing this article again next year. Plus as a gaming journo, it’s all sorts of handy to have more consoles. And tax deductable.

Some mightily tempting deals have started to appear of late though. For some reason I can’t quite explain, I really like the look of the white console that’s been announced for Sunset Overdrive at a cool £350. While some PS4 owners I know are planning on buying an XO in time for the Halo: Master Chief Collection, I’m not a big enough fan of that Spartan to buy a console for him. Kratos will always be my number one Spartan I’m afraid.

At the end of the day, it makes little financial sense for me to buy an Xbox One this year and it probably does for you too if you already own a PS4. But considering before the console launched it looked like a console for fools with horrendous ideas like pre-owned DRM and always online requirements, it’s been one hell of a turn-around to making it look like I need both a PS4 and Xbox One in my life. I don’t envy the impending decision for those of you that haven’t bought either yet.

I can see me breaking soon though, and working for Dealspwn means I’ll always be kept abreast of the best console bundle deals around, so I reckon when that white console gets bundled with a game I really want for a bit closer to £300 I’ll be diving in. That or when a new Gears of War arrives.

Or maybe PopCap have just dropped a deciding bomb. Peggle 2 has just been announced for PS4 on October 14th. Looks like Microsoft are going to have to wait that little bit longer after all.

How about it readers? Are you happy with which console you picked first. Has anything about the other options given you tinges of regret or jealousy? Or are you  yet to pick a side?

Wow, that was some very well disguised Sony propaganda going on there.

Let me pretend that I want an XO and then debunk every reason to try and put off potential MS customers.

Well played, very sneaky.

As for the question at hand, I will need to buy both consoles at some point as they both have exclusives that I really want to play but Sony are slightly ahead at the moment as Dead Rising 3 is out on PC in a few days and that was one of the exclusives that was top of my wish list.

Nahhh... xbox one is still better, better apps, better multitasking, better features, better online, even with ps4's slight gpu advantage the games look the same.

if you prefer crappy downtime online & no games, then get the indiestation 4

also great clickbait fanboy article, i'll let my dog read it.

I have a kitten called Bubbles. He prefers the xbone to the PS4 but overall prefers the Wii to them both.... DDR is his thing :p

Great Fanboy comment, jackass.

I felt justice was done to both sides in this argument. I'm still completely undecided in my venture into next-gen which probably means that I'll end up with a Wii U come the next price drop...

Nothing surprising there...Brendan's always slating MS, every piece he does is some Sony fanboy based post. Honestly, trawl through his work on here and you'll see what I mean. Its a shame, he does some good work which is totally let down by his MS bashing.

I prefer the XB1 to my PS4 but I'm on PC mostly anyway, but the TV aspect of the XB1 gives it the edge. Not played much on either tbh. Of the so called next gen consoles the Wii U has the best games at this point

Well as I game on a PC and pointed out in my reply I don't have either console but will probably buy a PS4 first so I'm not sure how that would make me an xbot, oh wait, you're one of those Sony lovers (sorry I don't know what the PS equivalent of xbot is, moron perhaps?) who can't see any other opinion but your own and has to bash on anybody who doesn't follow your Zealotry view of Sony.

It has already been pointed out that Brendan has an agenda against MS and posting an opinion piece in the guise of somebody who is considering buying an XO is rather funny.

Now crawl back under your rock and do as your name suggests.

Summed up exactly how i feel, but unlike the author I WILL be diving into multiplatform waters next week, Wii U, PS4 and Nextbox it only means good things for me, sadly not for my wallet.

It read like an inner struggle to me. That's why there was this back and forth going on.

WOW so much propaganda in this article, reeks of corporate pandering. Hopefully people are able to see what you're doing here and dont buy into xbone the worst game console ever made. So many of these articles coming out lately I guess with Sony absolutely destroying Microsoft in sales its no surprise shills are doing anything they can to try and sway people to buy that piece of garbage. Avoid xbone at all costs its pure trash and if you want to play Sunset Overhyped for some odd reason just wait until it comes to PC like most xbone "exclusives" do.

Wow, so many comments starting with Wow. And Wow, loads of accusations of propaganda. Wow.

Al the Xbones are crying a river. Face the true, the PS4 is and wil crush the Xbone this generation.

There is not one game to convince me to buy A Xbone. Not. one.
For the most and the best games, first party, second party, and even the third party games, (better then the Xbone counterparts,) you need only one console, the best console, the PS4

I know how you feel, Brendan.
I bought the xbox One, and have spent a lot of time wondering if I should've gotten the ps4. Been wondering that since before I got the console - I preordered it - and that question has nagged at me for a year now.
You see, I was completely torn on which to get. Both had big pros and big cons. I was particularly impressed with the ps+ service on Sony's consoles, and with the potential of the Kinect on Microsoft's new platform.

In the last few months, though, the gulf between MS gold and PS+ has closed considerably (some would argue the games on gold have been better than those on ps+ these last couple of months, but of course that's subjective - but it's nice that they're comparable now). And also in that last few months the potential of Kinect has pretty much died, too.

Don't get me wrong - I love my xbox. Titanfall is one of the best games I've played in years. I imagine I would've been very annoyed at missing it if I'd gone with Sony's console instead - but then again I might not have missed it if I'd never played it. And I've thoroughly enjoyed pretty much every single game I've played on it (though Thief was a let-down - but that's the game's fault, and would've been the same on any platform).

And I love most of the non-gaming applications, too.
If I'd bought the playstation I'd probably be mocking anyone who said they liked being able to use voice controls to change tv channel or adjust the volume - but truth be told, it's cool. Gimmicky, yeah, but it still makes me smile each time I do it, and we're now a year down the line.
And that's just one of many (arguably gimmicky) features. Scanning in QR codes is great. Snapping TV in a small window while I'm playing a game is great. Being automatically recognised and logged in when I walk in the room is great.

So why do I look at the PlayStation 4 and wonder whether I made the right choice?
Basically, it's as the headline suggests. The grass is always greener...
There's a bit of a shortage of games on both consoles so owners are looking elsewhere and perhaps wondering if they made the right choice. But if we'd picked the other console we'd almost certainly be loving it whilst casting envious looks at the other machine.

Would you and I be happy if we'd picked the other console? Probably.
Would we be happy to have both consoles? Of course.
Would we have been happier with the other console than the one we got? Probably not.
