As Matt pointed out in his deal on The Rockstar Collection, Steam aren’t exactly renowned for their low prices. However with another blinding deal – the second to have cropped up in as many days – you can now download all the Grand Theft Auto Classics for just £4.24. Unfortunately this is a short-lived offer which expires at midnight tonight (thank God I’d already seen Equilibrium or Film4 would have made me miss out on this one).
The deal consists of GTA 1, 2, 3, San Andreas and Vice City.
Have to say, I actually ordered myself a copy of GTA 1 from Amazon for old times sake, and couldn’t believe how many of hours of pure bliss I spent as youngster on what seems – looking back now anyway – a truly rubbish game. However, given the seminal quality of GTA 1 and its classic soundtrack, it’s a title which definitely justifies a place in every GTA fan’s collection.
It’s a bit of a shame Steam aren’t throwing in GTA London, but GTA 2, from what I can remember of it anyway, does add a few innovations to the format. You can add some interesting extras to your vehicles like mounted machine guns and slip up pursuers with oil slicks, but fundamentally, it more or less has the same gameplay of the 2D original at its core.
GTA 3, Vice City and San Andreas are what make this a truly great deal however. In some respects – apart from the visuals of course - I actually think these titles have more going for them than GTAIV. They are absolutely packed full of content (especially San Andreas with allows you to indulge in all kinds of homicidal madness from bunny hopping on people’s heads with a BMX to firing missiles at passers by from an F16) and are, in the long run anyway, a bit more of a laugh than the latest iterations. Sorry Niko.
