Guardian Heroes HD Headed To XBLA

SEGA have announced that a remastered port of Guardian Heroes, Treasure's cult action-RPG-fighting game from the Saturn era, is currently in development for Xbox Live Arcade. It's slated for a fall release with HD graphics and new modes - and we have the full details below.

Guardian Heroes originally released back in 1996 to critical acclaim, and its blend of 2D brawling mechanics with rewarding RPG elements made it bona fide cult classic. SEGA's next-gen port will contain the original arcade adventure along with online co-op, time attack modes and an 'arrange mode' that will freshen the core experience up with a few more modern contrivances. It's slated for release this Autumn on XBLA.

Ever since we began to make SEGA’s classic Dreamcast and the Mega Drive titles available for modern systems, the fan response has been overwhelming – and the demand for their favorite games has been pouring in. Players have been clamoring for this treasured favorite from the Saturn days, and we cannot wait to show them what we have got for them. - Haruki Satomi, SEGA VP of Digital Business

The feature press release runs as follows:

  • Action-RPG Brawling: Choose one of five heroes to level up and guide along a branching storyline with five different endings.
  • Friends, Foes, and Fighters: Play the game’s Story Mode alone or with a second player, or challenge Versus Mode with up to 12 players at once.
  • Extended Gameplay: Time Attack Mode, Arcade Mode, Arrange Mode and more allow players to explore every nuance of 45 different fighters.
  • Fully Re-Mastered: All-new graphics and visual effects bring the classic to life in a completely high-definition, widescreen presentation.

We hope that SEGA will put a lot more work into Guardian Heroes than they did for the likes of Crazy Taxi and Sonic Adventure. [NeoGAF]

We used to play this in six player mode on the Saturn and it was just utter madness! I always loved the vast range of characters, from the tiny little ones to that HUGE orb shaped one that took up a significant proportion of the screen!

I really cannot wait to play this again, it's been such a long time. My one hope is that it isn't one of those games you have fond memories of, but is then not as good as you remember when re-released... Hopefully they'll keep the co-op intact, there was so much replay value in going back and doing all the alternative paths through the game.

Please Sega, do a good job of this.
