Halo lore is as rich and vast as the universe in which it takes place, Master Chief's epic story surrounded by books and comics filling in all the gaps and providing fans with much canon to gorge upon. It'll be a while until the next Halo adventure - the fourth title, the start of a new trilogy, isn't likely to show its face until 2012 at the earliest - but it appears Microsoft has some plans in store to set up 343's first title, with the upcoming HD remake of Karen Traviss' novel all tying into Halo 4's story.
First off, it's already been revealed that 343 is including Terminals - Forerunner devices where the ancient race stored vital knowledge and secrets - in Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary Edition. Terminals first popped up in Halo 3, detailing the first Forerunner-Flood war; for Halo HD, the team at 343 is retrofitting Terminals into the game to tease and set-up Master Chief's current predicament aboard the severed half of Forward Unto Dawn, drifting towards a mysterious planet.
But just where exactly is this planet? Rumors persist that it's Onyx, the titular setting of Eric Nylund's Halo novel, Ghosts of Onyx, where a team of Spartans trained by Catherine Halsey discover the planet is in fact an ancient Forerunner facility. The follow-up to Ghosts of Onyx, Halo: Glasslands, is due in October, and this, too, will apparently tie into Halo 4.
I think it's pretty obvious Master Chief is drifting towards Onyx, or at least a planet in a similar mold. It's Forerunner, it's probably hiding a fair few dangerous secrets, and he'll have to do his hero thing to avoid the galaxy imploding all over again! Can't wait. [Amazon]
