Halo steals the show in today’s news roundup, with Bungie teasing Halo: Reach may be the last Bungie developed Halo, and Peter Jackson confirming the Halo movie has finally been cancelled. Other news sees Sony Computer Entertainment President deliver the keynote speech at the Tokyo Game Show 2009, and Star Wars putting on a less than spectacular show at Comic-con.
Halo: Reach The Last Bungie Halo
Halo: Reach may just be the last ever Halo to be developed by Bungie, if the claims made by Bugie’s senior designer Lars Bakken are anything to go by.
When questioned on Halo: Reach being the last Bugie-developed Halo, Bakken said “In terms of a platform for Halo games made by Bungie, yes. I can't answer that question for Microsoft though. Whether they have something in the works or not, I don't know if they're actually ready to talk about it yet, but in terms of Bungie-produced Halo games, ODST and then Reach is probably all you're going to get”.
It seems the most that could be squeezed out of Bungie Halo-wise would be another expansion similar to the upcoming ODST pack, but where Microsoft take the franchise remains to be seen. [ComputerandVideoGames]
Halo Movie Binned
Continuing the Halo themed news day, Peter Jackson has confirmed the long rumoured Halo movie is now finally dead. Since the project was announced back in September 2006, occasional updates on the movie have indicated all was well and good. Just last year Microsoft assured us they were “hard at work”, and still hiring for the project.
Although much to the dismay of Halo fans Jackson announced “Microsoft has a whole strategy with the Halo property, and when the rights expired with the two studios, that sort of ended my involvement with the project” going on to say “That fell apart because of internal politics at Fox and Universal. It had nothing to do with the budget or anything else. In fact, we hadn't even been greenlit at all at that point”. With Halo: Reach, Halo: ODST, and anime series Halo Legends on the way the future still looks bright for Halo fans. [JoyStiq]
Kaz Hirai Delivering Keynote Speech At Tokyo Game Show
Tokyo Game Show 2009 is fast approaching and surely with it some tasty gaming news. Kaz Hirai, president of Sony Computer Entertainment will be handling the keynote speech this year, with is address titled “New Tactics For 2009”. Exciting. A panel discussion featuring executives from Capcom, Namco Bandai and Square Enix will also be on hand to discuss their tactics and strategies for global game makers. Hirai last gave the keynote speech back in 2007, revealing the Dualshock 3. Hopefully this year can bring more exciting news. [Kotaku]
Star Wars Disappoint At Comic -Con
The anticipation for the annual Star Wars panel at Comic-Con was immense this year, even being dubbed “The Star Wars Spectacular”. But when the thing finally came, everyone was a tad disappointed. Fans were “treated” to old news, as well as apparently “bizarre” skits.
News worth a mention included a Star Wars concert, likely to take place in front of a big screen playing clips from the movies while an orchestra plays the appropriate music. Steve Sansweet also announced plans for a Star Wars celebration next summer to commemorate the 30th anniversary of The Empire Strikes Back, but where this is happening is anyone’s guess. Other news included the expected announcement of DLC for Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, and the news that it will be coming to the PC. [1UP]
