Happy Birthday Zelda: The Legend of Zelda Turns 25

Dust off your party hats, people, as Nintendo's much loved series, created by Shigeru Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka, turns 25 today. February 21st 1986 saw the release of the very first title - The Legend of Zelda - in a series that would go on to shift 59 million units and delight fans across the globe.

Whilst the series has not been without its detractors in the past, titles such as A Link To The Past and Ocarina of Time have long been held up as superlative examples of video game design and generational benchmarks, the latter consistently placed at the top of Best of All Time lists.

We last saw Link and co. in 2009's DS title Spirit Tracks, but Zelda fans need not fear for 2011 will see not one but two titles landing in the form of a 3DS remake of Ocarina of Time and all-new title Skyward Sword for the Wii.

Frankly, we just can't wait. You can check out 1UP's enormous retrospective here.

Got a favourite Zelda title you want to shout about? Do you think it's the best series in video gaming, or an overrated run of repetition? We'd love to get your thoughts on everything Zelda so hit us up in the comments below!

Twilight Princess was wonderful. I'm not sure why people put it down so often. I'm actually replaying Wind Waker for the anniversary. I also plan on playing Link's Awakening and Ocarina of Time on my 3DS when they come out this June.
