With the last of the films due next month and the books but a distant memory stored on our shelves, Warner Bros has an interesting problem on their hands milking profit from the Harry Potter franchise. Rowling doesn't appear interested in a new saga, and I doubt they'd be foolish enough to greenlight a new film without her approval. So what's a poor publisher to do? Well, how about an MMO, if recent rumors are to be believed.
It all stems from a curious new webpage dubbed Pottermore. Hold on, Dealspwn, I hear you cry; maybe it's just an online resource for budding pottery students? But, dear readers, we would reply; look below, at the little paragraph nestled below. Citing the Harry Potter brand and JK Rowling by name, it's obvious what this is for. As if the owls weren't enough!
So why do we think it's an MMO, then? It might just be an online library for all things Harry Potter, or the makings of a new interactive site for the franchise's rabid fanbase. Well, a trademark for the site unearthed by Massively reveals much more on the product itself, and between you and me, I have a feeling it won't be a resource for Harry Potter fan-fiction.
"Providing multiple-user access to a global computer information network; providing on-line chat rooms and electronic bulletin boards for transmission of messages among users in the field of general interest; providing on-line communications links which transfer the web site user to other local and global web pages; providing on-line facilities for real-time interaction with other computer users concerning topics of general interest"
Sounds a lot like an MMO to me, if a little more Playstation Home-esque than World of Warcraft. Adding further fuel to the fire, Lord of the Rings Online developer, Turbine Entertainment, has long been rumored to be working on a Harry Potter MMO. Furthermore, Rowling's YouTube channel features a countdown inching towards June 23rd, featuring the same art on the front of the Pottemore site.
All will be revealed, hopefully, at the end of the month. Until then, however, let's engage in a good old fashioned speculation debate shall we. What could this be, Dealspwners? [Massively]
