Do I need a headset for Battlefield 3?

If so, any recommendations?

As with all team battle games, it's recommended to have one but it's certainly not essential if you're a light to moderate player.
I usually only bother with a headset if I'm playing with friends or if I'm playing co-op or zombie mode on COD.
Played BF3 last night for four hours and the only time I heard another person using a headset was a bit of accidental (I assume) heavy breathing because he had the mic too close to his mouth.

Turtle Beaches are highly recommended if you do decide to go that route, but I've only ever used the headset that came with my 360...

I got a turtle beach headset as my original one broke - and WOW what a difference, even when playing games with no team speakers you can hear people creeping up that I would not have heard on my other headset or through the TV.
The Turtle beach (as others do) has the ability to increase your team speak or the game speak individually which is a nice feature.

Managed to break my Turtle Beach X1 last week and picked up an X12 just for Battlefield. Well worth the investment! Playing Co-op with a friend and voice is crystal clear and you can control how loud or quiet it is over the top of the game just with a wheel on the headset controls. The gaming sounds are awesome in terms of directionality you can easily identify where shots are coming from etc.
