If You Can't Beat Them...
Indie developer Jonatan Söderström feels that it's impossible to stop people pirating the unflinchingly raw yet utterly brilliant Hotline Miami, and has therefore decided to make their lives easier instead.
"I don't really want people to pirate Hotline Miami," Söderström tweeted, "but I understand if they do. I've been broke the last couple of months. It sucks." Despite his financial situation (which will hopefully be helped with strong Hotline Miami sales), he contacted Pirate Bay to let them know that a new patch has been released, and encouraged them to torrent and distribute it.
“We’re working on an update that hopefully will take care of any/all bugs, and we’ll try to do some extra polish in the next few days," he wrote. "Would be great if you could update the torrent when the patch is out! It’d be great if people get to play it without any bugs popping up. Hope everyone will enjoy the game!”
I definitely want people to experience the game the way it's meant to be experienced," Söderström concluded. "No matter how they got a hold of it."
Class act. With luck, those who do freely download the cracked version will at least donate some money to Dennaton Games, because ripping off a "broke" indie developer for the sake of £7.99 is utterly pathetic.
We gushed hot steaming praise onto Hotline Miami in today's 9/10 review, along with our Editor's Choice Award.
