If you missed the ridiculous £6.79 price for HotD: Overkill that we mentioned a few weeks ago then I have some vaguely consolatory news. It is now available for under ten pounds again, though sadly a few pounds up from that killer price. Zavvi is currently offering the game for £9.95 delivered, over £4 less than the next best price.
House of the Dead: Overkill is an on-rails zombie, sorry, mutant-fest of a shooter, much like its predecessors. However this episode in the long running series offers a tongue-in-cheek B-movie style that offers as much entertainment as the mutant execution itself. You play as archetypal “rookie cop” Agent G and your aim is to find and take down the evil Papa Caesar and kick as much zombie ass as possible in the process.
The graphics are great; some of the best seen on the Wii, and feature plenty of gore, exploding heads and limb-flying goodness. That said, the frame-rate is a bit all over the place at times and other technical issues rear their ugly heads way too often. The soundtrack is superb; perfectly matching and enhancing the over the top grindhouse style. The cheesy dialogue is well acted and full of hilarious movie clichés and the most eff-bombs ever heard in a video game. The levels are well thought out – my personal favourite is “Carny”; in between shooting mutant clowns to a bloody pulp, see if you can spot the Adrian Chiles-alike mutant!
House of the Dead: Overkill is very easy, irritatingly so in fact – even the bosses provide minimal challenge - but in some ways that works in its favour, making it a fantastically enjoyable romp (particularly when played with a friend) that you can blast your way through without having to stop to anything inconvenient like thinking. Highly recommended!
