Hyrule Warriors: Ganondorf playable, new nostalgic Adventure mode, co-op detailed

We've not heard anything about Ganondorf being playable in Super Smash Bros this coming winter, and indeed Sakurai has managed to avoid clones where possible for the Wii U and 3DS title, but that doesn't mean we won't be able to get our hands on the ginger Gerudo badass.

Nintendo recently announced that Ganondorf will be playable in this year's button-masher extraordinaire -- Hyrule Warriors.

Delivering the info via a curiously timed Nintendo Direct presentation (watch the whole thing below), producer Yosuke Hayashi and Nintendo's Eiji Aonuma also revealed that other villains such as Zant from The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and Ghirahim from The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword will be playable characters too when the game launches on September 19th.

Hayashi also went into depth about the game's modes. Legend mode will play out in much the same way as regular Warriors titles, with players taking over enemy keeps, but with added Zelda series items and bosses thrown into the mix for good measure. However, the brand new Adventure mode will offer "a nostalgic twist on the original The Legend of Zelda game by taking players through a recreated version of its overworld map, with each block on the grid representing one stage with its own unique victory conditions. Transported into the world of Hyrule Warriors each time, in true Zelda fashion players will be able to explore the map and locate rare items, while new weapons and some playable characters are only unlockable by advancing in this mode."

As with other Warriors titles, there'll be two-player co-op in this game, with perspectives split between the Wii U GamePad's screen and the TV screen, albeit with slightly reduced resolution to process both feeds. Off-TV mode will also be available in singleplayer too, in case anyone else in the house wants to watch something on the big screen.

You can check out my Hyrule Warriors preview right here.

Also available on September 19th will be a Hyrule Warriors: Limited Edition set that includes a rather natty scarf, and early buyers of the game who register their copy of Hyrule Warriors with Club Nintendo between 09:00 BST on 19th September 2014 and 22:59 BST on 17th October 2014 can receive a free download code for a Ganondorf Legacy Costume Set.
