Ice Age 3: Dawn of the Dinosaurs is a family (read: child) friendly action adventure romp based on the popular film of the same name. It is available on just about every console imaginable as it is squeezed for all its financial worth. There is currently an incredibly good deal on the Xbox 360 version (which seems a shame as it's hardly known for it's appeal to children), The Hut are offering the game for £15.73 – nearly £10 cheaper than the next best price!
Ok, so it's a game based on a kid's movie, so of course the target audience is youngsters. The fact that it is a film tie-in also paints the outlook for Dawn of the Dinosaurs in all sorts of shades of bleak. However while it is hardly going to be blowing anyone's minds with its content and innovation, it seems that it would be unfair to throw the title into the mire of the “just another movie cash-in” bin. There's a good variety of play here and some great voice acting and you can play as six different characters, each offering a different game experience.
It has received mediocre reviews across the board but better than average for a game of this ilk (usually around the 65% mark but rarely less than 60) and the main problems for critics seems to be that they find it too easy rather than unpleasant to play. The graphics are hardly tremendous but cheery and colourful and pleasing enough on the eye and the dialogue is heralded as genuinely hilarious. So for kiddies or fans of the films who are averse to a bit of gentle, non-taxing play, then Ice Age 3: Dawn of the Dinosaurs should be a worthwhile purchase. And frankly why would any of the rest of us even be considering buying it in the first place?
