Play. Cremate. Share.
Sucker Punch were set to reveal a "big secret" at this year's GDC- and we certainly weren't disappointed. They took the lid off a User Generated Content suite for inFamous 2 that will allow players to design and create their own levels with different challenges, objectives and abilities. These tools will enter public beta later this year, and we have the details below.
The UGC suite is designed so that players can create and share their own inFamous 2 levels online, bringing Sucker Punch's anticipated sequel into Sony's Play Create Share menagerie. On the Playstation Blog, development director Chris Zimmerman explained that this feature has been in development for the last two years.
We thought inFAMOUS 2 would be better if it didn’t end—if you never ran out of missions and mini-missions to play and things to do. So… we spent the last two years adding a User-Generated Content feature to the game.
As well as massive (dare I say infinite?) replay value, this feature should allow inFamous to to provide entirely new play experiences that go far beyond its original remit. The tools permit every aspect of the maps, mission parameters and even Cole's abilities to be adjusted, meaning that stealth levels or even bizarre minigames can be crafted with minimal effort.
Wish [inFamous 2] had pure stealth missions? No problem, you can create stealth missions. Looking for more of a challenge? Try taking away some of Cole’s powers—see how the player does facing a platoon of Militia wielding only his Amp.
Or add an old-school platforming challenge, or a race, or… I could go on all day. … Skeet shooting? No problem. Disc golf? Assuming you’re happy tossing around cars instead of Frisbees, sure. How about a mission where Zeke just tells you bad jokes until you shoot him? Um, yeah, you can do that, too.
We're convinced that Play Create Share is a more important step for gaming than Motion Control ever will be, and we're delighted to see its surprise inclusion in another AAA title. Apparently inFamous 2 will feature a community hub where maps can be downloaded and rated, with Sucker Punch publicising the best of the bunch. [PS Blog]
The UGC suite will enter public beta in April, with more details arriving on March 14th. We'll keep you posted.
So... yeah. We couldn't be more excited about this. Why not check out Felix's recent preview for more information about the core experience?
