While Call of Duty is without doubt the most successful first-person shooter of all time, is it the best, too? It's an excellent shooter with an addictive multiplayer offering, but can it stack up next to the likes of Half Life, Halo or Bioshock? Sledgehammer Games seem to think so, claiming their development partners on Modern Warfare 3 are "arguably the best first-person shooter development team out there".
Regarding what it's like to work on Call of Duty with Infinity Ward, Sledgehammer Games' co-founder Michael Condrey told Now Gamer it's "quite a challenge, I tell you. We’re standing on the shoulders of greatness on Modern Warfare 2. It’s a fantastic game. Infinity Ward has been working in the franchise for a decade and they’re arguably the best first-person shooter development team out there."
In the wake of former heads Jason West and Vince Zampella's departure from the studio, Infinity Ward lost a lot of staff and had to restructure. As such, publisher Activision brought in upstart Sledgehammer to assist in development, and Condrey speaks of an excellent team spirit and camaraderie where each studio is looking to "push each other to look at every part of the game".
According to Condrey, Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer share the load equally. The former isn't just in charge of single or multiplayer, for example, with each team assisting in every corner of the project. Condrey admits it creates its own "unique challenges, logistically" splitting the work between two studios, but claims its in the best interests of you, the player, when the game ships this November.
Whether Sledgehammer will work on further Call of Duty games with Infinity Ward is unclear, but Condrey did mention that, moving forward, social networking hub Call of Duty Elite will ensure the franchise's future is bright and bold. "It brings a sort of umbrella platform that will bring all of the efforts from all of the Call of Duty games together. Everything you did in Black Ops and you now do in Modern Warfare 3 will be in your stats, will be in Elite. So whatever that next Call of Duty game is will also be housed under Elite." [Now Gamer]
