'It Has To Be Much Bigger Than The PlayStation Platform'
Thatgamecompany's Jenova Chen has dropped a few tantalising tidbits about their next game, which will likely launch on more than just the PlayStation Network.
Speaking to Polygon before a presentation at DICE Summit 2013, Chen revealed that Journey's development cycle practically emptied their pockets. "I wouldn't say that the development of Journey was a successful example of game development," he said. "We bankrupted the company."
"I think to have a financial success, that is going to change everyone, it has to be much bigger than a game on the Playstation platform... my resolution is to create a big financial success."
So what will the new game entail? Though remaining vague on specifics, Chen suggested that it will build upon some of Journey's themes, such as communicating and cooperating with other players in non-traditional ways. In other words: making a connection.
“Journey was focused on connection," he explained. "I think we are trying to do one level above that with this game. It’s very likely, that’s impossible.”
“This will be one level above that connection.”
Chen suggested that the language barrier might well prove to be a hurdle when it comes to explaining his project, but also was quick to point out that another "high-quality, emotional" and "artistic" title is definitely in the offing.
