Promises “An Emotional, Exciting & Challenging Journey”
After weeks of waiting and plenty of teasing on Twitter, Red Thread Games have officially begun their Kickstarter campaign for Dreamfall Chapters: The Longest Journey. The target? $850,000, but should it be met the Norwegian studio promises to deliver “a proper adventure game” with a “rich, deep, and complex storyline.” We have more info, along with the Kickstarter pitch video, after the jump.
“Revisiting familiar locations and characters, and introducing new sights and sounds, new faces, new game mechanics, new thrills and challenges, Dreamfall Chapters takes the player on an emotional, exciting and challenging journey” reads the Kickstarter page, “from a dystopian cyberpunk future, through the mysterious and dreamlike Storytime, to the magical landscapes of Arcadia.” The series’ creator, Ragnar Tørnquist, has managed to reassemble the core team that was responsible for The Longest Journey, and the team believe that they have the ability and passion to create a “3D point-and-click interface and engaging puzzle gameplay designed for fans of adventure games.”
Funcom, the owners of the IP rights, arranged a licensing agreement with Red Thread Games when the project was announced last year, allowing for Tørnquist and his team to create the long-requested sequel. While production has been privately funded, Red Thread Games has turned to Kickstarter to help raise funds to complete the project and self-publish. This will allow them to retain the freedom to create the game they have been wanting to make for the past six years.
The adventure game will see the continuation and conclusion of Zoë Castillo’s story, which was left on a cliffhanger in Dreamfall. However, it has been confirmed that players will assume control of three characters over the course of the title. As it was previously announced with the launched of the Red Thread Games website, the game will take place over many seasons with the in-game engine reflecting the change in weather, and will see players return to familiar places in the Longest Journey story, along with new locations to discover.
So there we have it - it's finally happening and how it's down to the gaming community to put their money where their mouth is. A $25 will bag you a digital copy upon the games release (although a $20 early bird special tier is currently available for the first 5000 punters) with additional tiers providing artbooks, forums titles, soundtracks, and other fancy extras. We have placed the widget for the Kickstarter below for your convenience, but if you have absolutely no idea what The Longest Journey saga is all about, or just want to experience the adventures of April Ryan & Zoë Castillo yet again, you can always head over to GOG.com and buy both TLJ and its sequel Dreamfall in a bundle for around £13.50.
We will certainly be keeping an eye on the progression of this Kickstarter, and will bring you more news as we get it.
