Fixing most of the problems the original suffered from Killzone 2 returned on PlayStation 3 doing what the original should have and that’s delivering a class-A first person shooter. If you’ve overlooked this sequel so far or just fancied giving it a miss then now’s the perfect time to find out what you did indeed miss. Game and now Gamestation both have this listed for £9.99 that’s a good £3 cheaper than next closest Amazon and Tesco.
Despite the original getting some decent reviews from ‘official’ sources it’s widely accepted to have been a lesser game. So it was reassuring that the next-gen sequel turned out to be rather good. If you’ve missed everything about Killzone then it opts for the space scenario from the gaming-trinity of zombie, Nazi, space-aliens as the only possible choices for games developers to choose. Largely we’re told as none of those can sue you. Beside that the other bit of information is that this is a military-shooter, so you should be imagining large space-marine grunts, rolling off semi-literate one-liners. Unlike the original that was set on the besieged Earth, sorry Vecta, the sequel has you taking the fight to the alien world of Helghan.
The gameplay while not quite to the level of squad based does find to continually being accompanied by a grunt or two that act intelligently enough. The same goes for the enemy and it’s certainly a cover and fire game. In its own way it’s a tactical shooter with the emphasis on shooter, the weapons feel realistic and you’ll pitched against mainly the same enemies throughout. Ultimately, if you like this type of approach, it’s rewarding as the levels are varied enough to keep your brain constantly working attempting to out do the enemy. Certainly for a tenner it won’t disappoint.
