Leaving Dealspwn - any questions for my last podcast?

JonLester |  Jul. 2, 2015 at 16:00

UPDATE 2: We'll be recording on Thursday evening! There's still time.

UPDATE: We'll be recording this week, so there's still time to submit questions.

It has now been five and a half years since I started writing for Dealspwn.

It has been amazing, genuinely. Partly down to the games I've played, the events I've attended and the graft, but mainly down to the community. When you work a site for nearly six years, a comment from a regular makes your day. Even if you're kicking my **** for something I messed up.

However, next Friday I'll be leaving Dealspwn to pursue a new career in a completely different industry. It was a tough decision, but one that I've got to go for.

Anyway, I'm not gone yet, so let's crack on.

Seeing as we typically record a 'half time' podcast halfway through the year, I'd ideally like to hijack the last few minutes to do an Ask Me Anything-style Q&A session. Leave a question in the comments below, about anything within reason, and I'll answer it honestly in the podcast.

I do mean anything, including my articles, reviews, opinions and tastes (keep it clean-ish). If you've got something you want to ask or even have a bone to pick, let me know.

If it's a trivia question or something silly, I reserve the right to ignore it, get it wrong or generally take the ****. However, I'd encourage you to ask any questions you have about how games media/reviewing/journalism actually works behind the scenes.

I won't hold back unless the question is too personal (which I'll probably leave up to Carl) or I legally can't answer it (which is unlikely, but I'll explain why if it happens). So, basically, ask away.

In the fairly plausible event that we don't get enough questions to make it worth a podcast segment, I'll just reply here.

Chances are we'll be recording it tomorrow afternoon or early next week.

Anyway, I'd best get back to work. And thanks, guys.

Are you leaving to pursue that idea of making and funding Prototype 3 on Kickstarter?

@Adventchild: Well you forgot to patent it! :D Sorry for cutting you out of the deal.

We had a deal guuuuuuuuuy.

No but seriously I would be interested in how games reviewing works, especially if you're biased to a certain genre, game type or even platform, how much credit do you give a platform if it's something you do not enjoy?

FantasyDealSteve  Jul. 2, 2015 at 17:22

For the Podcast;

Good luck in pursuing your new career, Whatever it may be.

Question: In the 5.5 years writing for Dealspwn, What is the highlight(s)? One more thing, What's the best game you've ever played? Obviously we're entitled to our own opinions :)

Again, Good luck mate :)

Late  Jul. 2, 2015 at 19:11

Sorry to hear you're leaving, mate! :(

Best of luck in your new career.

Don't abandon us completely. I hope to see you commenting from time to time. It's fun over on our side - you can disagree with the staff a lot more easily than you can if they're colleagues ;)

Would love to know more about how your job works/worked. It's gotta be strange when your hobby and your job overlap. I don't spend my evenings and my days off doing trial balances and tax returns for fun, believe me! How many hours a week do you work? Is that something you can actually gauge? Then again, does it matter, if your overtime means playing a game you enjoy? Probably matters if you're playing something you don't much like, or reading boring press releases and articles.
I'm totally intrigued by the idea of games-based journalism. It's something I've always been fascinated by and fantasized about doing (in a massively over-romanticized way that involves me getting a lot of money and only ever experiencing the positive sides of the job whilst completely ignoring the negatives!)

Quietus  Jul. 2, 2015 at 23:05

Good luck, Jon, which whatever you move on to.:D

I'm not going to ask you what your favourite game of all time is, but I would instead ask: Knowing the games you have loved over the years, if you could erase all knowledge of one of them, to relive it in every possible way, which game would you love to experience (and fall in love with) all over again?

JonLester  Jul. 3, 2015 at 00:13

Thanks everyone. :) Sorry for the out of the blue post and gutted to be leaving if I'm honest, believe it or not it's the comments and replies I'll miss the most.

Great questions! Tempted to answer them now but I'll hold off for the cast. Keep them coming - depending on who joins me we might all get involved for some of them. Probably not recording tomorrow now, so there's plenty of time.

But again, I'll still be around for another week and my backlog is fairly fearsome. It's going to be a long one!

@FD: Cheers pal. :D Awesome questions too, looking forward to answering them!

@Late: Thanks mate - and yeah, hopefully I'll have time to become a regular myself with any luck. Going into a different industry means that my free time will be my own (and I'll need cheap games!). Don't want to get overly melodramatic with a week still to go, but you guys have made the job worth doing over the last half decade. TBH I'd miss y'all if I went cold turkey.

@Quietus: Much appreciated, both the kind words and (to reiterate what I said to Late) for getting involved over the last few years!

Also, cor, great question. Really burning to answer it/write an article about it but will try to hold fire for now.

Crazy Jamie  Jul. 6, 2015 at 20:57

All the best for the future Jon; I've commented on only a small number of your reviews but have really appreciated them. I read Dealspwn pretty much exclusively for online reviews now, and I really do think you'll be a loss to this site.

Anyway, enough of the soppy stuff, here are my questions:

1) Does playing games to review them ever get in the way of you actually enjoying them?

2) Have you ever stuck with a game that you didn't like solely because you had to review it, and found by the end that you actually liked it a lot more than you thought you would?

3) Have you developed any gaming interests or started liking a genre or series that you didn't historically like through playing games to review them?

Also, just because you'll be answering these on a podcast...

4) How much would wood a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?

(Hint: The answer is "A woodchuck would chuck as much wood as a woodchuck could chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood". Best of luck).

Crazy Jamie  Jul. 6, 2015 at 20:59

Just noticed how old this question was. I hope you haven't already recorded it. Because I want to hear the answers to my questions. Especially the woodchuck one.

JonLester  Jul. 6, 2015 at 21:10

@Jamie: sincere thanks for the kind words, dude. Much appreciated and I know you read our stuff!

Don't worry, we'll now be recording towards the end of the week, so I'll get around to them no problem!

Sorry to hear you're going. Been a pleasure reading your work these last few years. Personally, i'd ask that, given your experiences of the last almost six years, where do you see gaming 20 years from now?

Breadster  Jul. 8, 2015 at 22:19

Only just seen this, and it sucks. You and Matt have been two of my favourite games journalists and now neither of you are here, Dealspwn won't be the same without you (no offense to the rest of the staff). :(

My questions are:

What's your favourite games console and why?

Do you find it easier/harder to fairly review a game you like/dislike?

What process do you go through when reviewing a game? Do you just play as you would normally and take notes as you go along, or are there specific things you do in a specific order? Do you play through one game completely before moving to another or multiple games at once, if so do you think that has an affect on a review (for example switching between a great game and a mediocre game during the review process could perhaps lower your perception of the mediocre game by contrast)?

Best of luck in your future endeavours.

Thanks a lot Tr0r and Breadster!

So, one last update, the podcast recording has been pushed back again to the weekend. Should let us do something fun with it.

I was also gonna have a booze-up in a brewery, but just couldn't quite organise it. :P

Erm, but otherwise, I'm off today. I wish you all the very best and thanks again for being the best community on the internet. It might sound a bit lame, but you guys have made the job worth doing and hopefully I'll have time to become a regular myself. Otherwise, I'd miss ya too much.

Thanks Jon.
The site won't be the same.

JonLester  Jul. 11, 2015 at 12:02

Cheers Late. :)

We've just recorded the podcast and it should go up after the weekend. Just once more, it's been a real privilege writing for you guys.

I'd get soppier (and do in the cast) but the fact is I'll probably still hang out.

CarlPhillips  Jul. 13, 2015 at 13:04

Hello all,

I just wanted to let you know that the podcast will be going over on-site / YouTube at 5PM today. As Jon has already mentioned, there were some fantastic questions from you all and I really do hope you enjoy what ended up being a huge episode of the Game Buzz.

While I'll be sure to post a link in here when it's live, stayed tuned to the site later today for Jon's last hurrah!

CarlPhillips  Jul. 13, 2015 at 17:54

The Jacksonville Jaguars turned the initial employees in direction of employ a brain educate, pronouncing Doug Marrone will acquire earlier mentioned in opposition to his interim part. The Jaguars much too introduced again Tom Coughlin in just a senior workforce position the place he will be inside of price tag of the 53-male roster Zane Beadles Color Rush Jersey. The Jaguars choice gets rid of them towards the Josh McDaniels sweepstakes, which previously capabilities the San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Rams. The 49ers are future this procedure in opposition to a several alternative angles Ahmad Brooks Color Rush Jersey, and just one of them includes the Denver Broncos. The Broncos and 49ers both of those interviewed Atlanta Falcons OC Kyle Shanahan, and equally incorporate interviews protected up with Miami Dolphins DC Vance Joseph. Denver is interviewing Joseph upon Tuesday, and the 49ers include an job interview coated up with him upon Thursday.Irrespective of whether or not that job interview transpires stays toward be discovered, and it may perhaps shake out some a lot more of this scenario. Broncos reporter Mike Klis provided up his impression of the scenario.Towards me its uncomplicated If Vance Joseph leaves these days devoid of present consideration will switch towards Kyle Shanahan as HC. If Joseph continues to be he's the gentleman. 9sporting activities Mike Klis (MikeKlis) January 10, 2017It appears which includes the Broncos may be the up coming staff members towards determine out their thoughts training circumstance Eli Harold Color Rush Jersey. The 49ers and Rams include interviews scheduled into the weekend. The Chargers and Payments are a small further more unattainable in the direction of determine out as much as I can inform Antoine Bethea Color Rush Jersey. If the Broncos are centered within upon Joseph and or Shanahan, they may possibly get hold of this sorted out beautiful abruptly. They can not signal Shanahan in direction of a deal till at the time the Falcons are done with the playoffs. They are unable to even incorporate a instant job interview with him till future 7 days if the Falcons eliminate this weekend, or the immediately after 7 days regardless of whether or not the Falcons get the NFC name activity. They can’t indicator Shanahan until eventually he is finished with the playoffs, nonetheless if the 2 aspects come to a decision towards produce it take place, we’ll listen above it in advance of then.
