Left 4 Dead 2 is set in the aftermath of the zombie apocalypse, where the dead rise from their graves to feast on the flesh of the living. Focusing on four stranded survivors, Coach, a high-school football teacher voiced by Cutty from The Wire, Nick, a silver tongued gambler and con-artist, Rochelle, a reporter documenting the evacuation efforts, and Ellis, a rambling, likable mechanic. The eclectic cast is constantly on the move, with their journey ranging from the swamps of Louisiana to the zombie-infested carnival sprawl.
Despite their lack of military experience, each member of the group is proficient with a weapon, be it pistol, rifle or shotgun. Left 4 Dead is structured around a series of corridor runs, be it through swamps, city streets or actual corridors, as the game's patented 'AI Director' throws ever-changing and random enemy encounters and formations in your way. Left 4 Dead is a game with co-op at its heart, and it's a much more enjoyable and rewarding experience when you play with your friends.
As far as sequels go, Left 4 Dead 2 doesn't exactly set the bar. The visuals are largely the same, except for some retooled weapons and enemy models. The amount of zombies and their differing subspecies has been enlarged, such as the Hazmat suit-wearing zombies, immune to fire. Valve has also introduced the joy of melee weapons, such as cricket bats and even katanas, which club, thwack and slice their way through the zombie horde with gruesomely satisfying proficiency. The AI Director has been retooled to throw even more variety into the mix, and the range of multiplayer and versus options has been bolstered with new additions like the ruthless 'Realism' mode, which makes surviving that much harder for the sadomasochist types who enjoy to inflict mental suffering upon themselves.
