When it comes to survival horror games, there is certainly no shortage of great titles - in fact this is a genre which is bursting at the seams. But despite how good the likes of Resident Evil 5 and Overkill might be, few horror games have caused as much commotion as Left for Dead. It is true that the sequel, Left for Dead 2, is well on the way (due to be released in November), but that it is not to say the first edition should not be written off completely.
Currently the Left for Dead GOTY edition is going for £22.99 on Gameplay. This features downloadable content such as ‘Survival Mode’ and, according to the Hotukdeals thread, gives you a great saving on the best GOTY price of £29.99 from Play.com. It is true that the DLC can be acquired free, but according to price comparison the cheapest price for a normal copy (currently in stock) is around £33 from Coolshop.
Left for Dead follows the age old zombie apocalypse type narrative where, as part of a small group of survivors, you must battle your way through hordes of cannibalistic monsters and utilize whatever weapons become available. However Left for Dead really sets itself apart from other survival horror games. The gameplay is intense and unpredictable. Enemy placement is constantly varied meaning levels are never the same twice and the game is highly challenging, making it feel as though you really are fighting for survival.
On the downside the levels are few in number, and although the team AI is ok, this is a game which really has to be experienced online. Without doubt, this is the best survival horror game currently on market, but if you’re more into solo play then it’s probably better to look elsewhere.
