The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass £9.99 @ Argos [DS Game]

A fantastic deal here for anyone who loves the Zelda series. Argos are offering up copies of The Legend of Zelda : Phantom Hourglass on the Nintendo DS for the staggeringly low price of £9.99. Given that the next best price for a brand new copy is over £23 this is an absolute steal. So if you own a DS get in there quick!

Phantom Hourglass picks up the Zelda adventure where it was left off by the Nintendo Game cube’s Wind Waker World.  While searching for a legendary ghost ship which is rumoured to sail the seven seas, Link and his girlfriend Tetra suddenly find themselves in mortal danger. Then, in a narrative which is typical of Zelda,  a helpless Tetra is forced to rely on our masculine hero to come to the rescue.

However what is more untraditional about the Phantom Hourglass is that Nintendo have deliberately tailored the game so it appeals to as wide an audience as possible. Although this may upset a few hardcore fans, it’s certainly good news for the rest of us! The game has been adapted to the DS format (which of course means no d-pad) and overall, is slightly more light hearted when compared to some of the other Zelda editions.

But although touch screen does have a few draw backs as it is not quite as precise as the d-pad (Link will occasionally do rolls or swipe his sword for no apparent reason) the DS version revolutionizes item usage. There are an endless number of ways in which items can be used in conjunction with the DS pad; like guiding Link’s boomerang through barriers, round corners and behind enemies for unexpected back attacks.

The game also has massive scope, with a huge, thriving, and fully interactive world with tons to explore. Although the total game time runs for approximately 15 hours, that does not include the huge number of sub quests on offer. Visuals are also unparalleled, and to their credit, Nintendo are really pushing the capacity of the DS to its limits.

Although fans of the classic Zelda games may find a few things to gripe about in Phantom Hour Glass (as it's certainly much easier and shorter than your usual Zelda epic), Nintendo do deserve huge praise.  The way they have condensed a game like Zelda into a great pocket package in terms of its gameplay and graphics is remarkable. So if you have never experienced the legendary Zelda before this is a great one to try, but even if you have, Phantom Hourglass is still worth a look!
