Richard Garriott To Crowd-Fund New Project?
Now here’s another blast from the past - it appears that none other Ultima creator Richard Garriott will be making an announcement this Friday in regards to a new project. Using the name of his virtual persona, Lord British, he will be presenting… something, and by heading over to his newly created website you will find a countdown to the impending annoucement, along with a sign-up form for more information.
For the last 3 years Garriott has been working at Portalarium - a company he founded with the purpose of developing and publishing games on social networks. However, back in 2011 he reportedly stated that he was actively working on a spiritual successor to Ultima Online in some form, and was even in talks with EA to attain the rights to the Ultima IP. If this turns out to be true, and if the talks were successful, it would allow him to make an official sequel.
The whole setup feels remarkably similar to what another legendary developer did last year, when he crowd-funded a certain space sim to record-breaking levels. This raises a few questions - Is Garriott creating a spiritual successor Ultima Online, or something else entirely? If it is a crowd-funding effort, will we be looking at similar targets to Star Citizen? More importantly, will Garriott and his team provide a presentation as polished as Chris Roberts’ original unveiling? Whatever the answers are, we’re certain to know more at 4pm GMT this Friday, and we’ll be here with all the details as they emerge.
